THAT WAS THEN: NORFOLK'S HAMPTON BOULEVARD BRIDGE

Things have changed considerably since the summer of 1912 when

William P. Moore Sr., an early Norfolk motorist, paused to crank his

vintage automobile on the old Hampton Boulevard Bridge over Tanners

Creek. The bridge connected the then rapidly developing Larchmont

residential area to the mainly undeveloped North Shore and Lochhaven

areas on the opposite side. The lad togged out in the

then-fashionable middy blouse outfit was William P. Moore Jr., who

apparently was having trouble awaiting his father's efforts to get

the car going. The old bridge that has long since been replaced by

the handsome span of today, was also traversed with street car

tracks, easily seen to the right of the picture, that accommodated

northbound public transportation.

The lower photo shows the present six-lane Hampton Boulevard Bridge

looking north toward the Norfolk Naval Station.
