Thurman C. Hewett, 80, of the 4700 block of Larkspur Court, died Sept. 11, 1997, in Norfolk.
He retired as Norfolk branch manager of Addressograph/Multigraph Corp. after 37 years of service and also retired from the District Court in Virginia Beach after 10 years. He was born in Alba, Texas, and was a member and deacon of Kempsville Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, where he also served as an usher and past president and music director of the Men's Bible Class. He was a member of Kempsville Masonic Lodge No. 196 A.F.&A.M. and also of the Kempsville Lions Club, where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow 1994, past president 1968-1969 and Kempsville Lions of the Year 1989-1990, Hearing Conservation chairman and life member with 35 years of perfect attendance. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and served in the Office of Strategic Services, Washington, D.C.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Frances A. Hewett; a daughter, Joy H., and husband, Richard T. Thompson Jr. of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two sons, Don R., and wife, Diane P. Hewett of Virginia Beach, James T. Hewett of Virginia Beach and fiancee, Christy Peter; a sister, Mary M. Hewett of Houston; a brother, William Raymond Hewett of Downey, Calif.; five grandchildren, Meredith and Pete Foy of Suffolk, Todd A. Hewett of Virginia Beach, Ashley A. Watson, Richard Taylor Thompson III and Ashley Rae Thompson, all of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; and special loved ones, Garland and LeClaire Anderson, James and Dot Anderson and Shirley A. Copeland, all of Elizabeth City, N.C.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, by Dr. Kelly J. Burris and the Rev. Michael Turner. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, where the family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times at the residence.
