EUGENE BROWN SR.

In the quiet still of the morning, Bishop Eugene Brown Sr., 75, of the 3100 block of Aloma Court, slipped quietly away to be with the Lord, Thursday Sept. 11, 1997. Bishop Brown was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to the late Ms. Juanita Brown and Mr. Eugene Martin Sr.

Bishop Brown was bestowed the honor of being named Bishop Emeritus of the Eastern Diocese of the Church of Christ (Hol.) U.S.A. in July of 1997. He had served as a pastor for a total of more than 40 years with the last 23 years at the First Church of Christ (Hol.) U.S.A., Norfolk, and also presiding bishop of the Eastern Diocese for 23 years. On the national level, after being ordained bishop, Bishop Brown served as chairman of the National Board of Claimants and second vice president and first vice president of the National Convention.

In the local community, Bishop Brown served on the Huntersville Community Project and the building of the Barberton Housing Development along with many other various committees in the City of Norfolk.

Bishop Brown received his theological degree from the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago.

Bishop Brown was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. During his tour, he received the World War II Victory Medal; American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal; Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Medal of Good Conduct; and was honorably discharged in January of 1946.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 53 years, Mrs. Susie Lee Dean Brown; daughter, Melanie Jean Brown of the home; six sons, Gordon Dean Brown Esq. (Sandy), Eugene Brown Jr. Esq. (Debbie),both of Piedmont, Calif., John Eldridge Brown (Yvonne) of Newport News, the Rev. Milton L. Brown of Washington, D.C., Elder Carey J. Brown Sr. (Angela) of Wilmington, Del., Mark A. Brown (Stephanie) of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Minnie Miles of Venice, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, Ryan, Ebony, Carey Jr., Darius, Eric, Johnelle, Robert, Phillip, Courtney, Brock, Danielle and Little Blair; and many nieces and nephews; along with many other colleagues, friends and loved ones.

The body will lie in repose Monday at 5 p.m. with a Christian Wake to be held from 7 to 8 p.m. The Service of Celebration will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the body lying in repose at 9:30 a.m. All services will be at First Church of Christ (Hol.) U.S.A., 862 E. Princess Anne Road, Norfolk, with Bishop Lindsey E. Jones officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.
