A U.S. Navy jet crashed Sunday in Oman during a routine training exercise, killing the pilot, a U.S. Navy official said.
The pilot's identity was being withheld pending notification of his family. Officials were investigating.
The F/A-18 Hornet crashed about 75 miles northeast of the southern Omani port of Raysut, an official with the Bahrain-based U.S. Navy's Central Command said on condition of anonymity.
The aircraft was located after a search by U.S. and Omani forces. The pilot's body was returned to the carrier.
The U.S. aircraft was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 15, based in Jacksonville, Fla., and operated from the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy.
