Asa Lee Kelly Sr., 73, of the 300 block of Edgewood Road, died Sept. 16, 1997, in his residence.
A native of Lynchburg, Va., he had retired as a captain from the Portsmouth Police Department. He had also retired from the Portsmouth Public School System. He was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church, Olive Branch Football Association (Tomahawks), Cradock Football Association, Fraternal Order of Police, Portsmouth Notable, Commissioner of Parks and Recreation and founder of Safety Town. He was a man devoted to youth everywhere all his life.
Survivors include his wife, Louise D. Kelley; two daughters, JoAnn M. Cole of Suffolk and Beverly Weaver of Portsmouth; two sons, Patrick John Kelly of Portsmouth and Michael T. Kelly of Mechanicsville; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Asa L. Kelly Jr.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Tom Potter. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
