Lorene Cox Henderson, 87, a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1997, in Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News. She was the widow of Arthur P. Henderson and was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Cox Gooden and a brother, Leon Cox.
She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, a vice-president and member of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class, and a member of the Woman's Society. She was an elementary school teacher in the Portsmouth and Chesapeake public schools for 23 years. She was an alumna of Longwood College. Mrs. Henderson was a member and past president of the Forum, past president of the Portsmouth Junior Woman's Club, and a member of the Portsmouth Woman's Club.
She is survived by two sons, Arthur P. Henderson Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Newport News and Richard L. Henderson of Miami, Fla.; four grandchildren, Julie, Michael, David, and Brent; and a brother, the Rev. Earl Cox of Fredericksburg, Va.
Visitation of friends and family will be held at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, from 5 to 7 p.m. today. A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth.
