JOHN PERSHING GRIGGS SR.

J.P. Griggs Sr., 80, of the 3700 block of King Point Arch died Sept. 18, 1997, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Born in Sigma, Va., Princess Anne County, he was a lifelong resident of Virginia Beach. He was the son of the late Rebecca and Charles Whitsey Griggs.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 59 years, Hazel Poole Griggs; his daughter, Sandy G. Mandell; a son, John P. Griggs Jr.; a sister, Ruth G. Hamilton, all of Virginia Beach; a granddaughter, Robin L. Mandell of Eagle River, Alaska; two grandsons, Michael Scott Mandell of Jacksonville, Fla., Jeffrey B. Griggs of Charlotte, N.C.; and nieces, nephews and loyal friends.

Mr. Griggs was a Master Mason and a charter member of Masonic Temple Lynnhaven Lodge 220 and currently served Virginia Beach Lodge 274. For 14 years, he was a bus driver and station manager for Norfolk Southern Bus Co. and a 30-year veteran of the Virginia ABC Board, where he served as an inspector and district auditor until his retirement in 1983.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. S. David Carriker. Masonic Rites will be accorded at the grave. The family will receive friends and relatives at Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Ave. Chapel, from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
