HUGH I. COONS SR.

Hugh Irwin Coons Sr., 82, of the 4600 block of Dolly Madison Lane died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, in his residence after a long fight with cancer.

Mr. Coons was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and a member of Haygood United Methodist Church. He was retired from Sealtest as the Norfolk Plant manager. He was a World War II Combat Wounded Veteran receiving the honors of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a member of the 40&8 Voiture Locale No. 86 and the Norfolk Post No. 204 of the American Legion, the Virginia Beach Chapter of the V.F.W., the Tidewater Food Dealers Association, the G.M.R.A. of both Tidewater and Richmond, the past national and local president of the Charles H. Consolvo Tent of the Circus Saints and Sinners, a current member of the Allie Schmidt-Connie Mack Tent of Cape Coral, Fla., the Westgate Masonic Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Police Association.

Mr. Coons is survived by his wife, Adella Coons; two daughters, Nancy C. Belote of Virginia Beach and Patricia A. Kiger of Matthews, N.C.; a son, Hugh Irwin Coons Jr. of Virginia Beach; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Haygood United Methodist Church by the Rev. Alan G. Reifsnyder. Interment with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Haygood United Methodist Church, 4713 Haygood Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23455. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
