Lake Powell, built in 1957, provides electricity, supports tourism

and recreation, and serves as a source of water for Phoenix, Las

Vegas and Los Angeles.

Environmentalists and recreationists agree on the beauty of the

red-rock canyons that line Lake Powell. But the Sierra Club wants to

drain the reservoir - the second-largest man-made lake in the United

States - to restore the canyons' full splendor.

Lake Powell has become a tourism mecca and is the lifeblood of Page,

Ariz. Last year, 2.5 million people visited the remote reservoir.
