Lake Powell, built in 1957, provides electricity, supports tourism
and recreation, and serves as a source of water for Phoenix, Las
Vegas and Los Angeles.
Environmentalists and recreationists agree on the beauty of the
red-rock canyons that line Lake Powell. But the Sierra Club wants to
drain the reservoir - the second-largest man-made lake in the United
States - to restore the canyons' full splendor.
Lake Powell has become a tourism mecca and is the lifeblood of Page,
Ariz. Last year, 2.5 million people visited the remote reservoir.
