HAMPTON ROADS PORT HAS A GOOD SUMMER

It was a good summer for the port of Hampton Roads.

General cargo tonnage handled by local terminals was up 19 percent for the month of July compared to the same month last year and up 11.2 percent for August.

That puts the port up 13.6 percent for the first eight months of the year, according to figures released at the monthly meeting of the Virginia Port Authority.

The ports handled 932,433 tons of general cargo in August, compared to 838,316 tons in 1996.

Of the total, 878,754 tons were hauled in containers and 53,679 were break-bulk. Total tons of break-bulk, however, is down 4.3 percent for the year.

The port reached a record for annual general cargo tonnage with the 12 months ending in June. Ten million tons passed through the Hampton Roads terminals.
