ROBERT E. SINNOTT

Capt. Robert E. ``Bob'' Sinnott, 82, died Sept. 22, 1997, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.

He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Virginia Beach. Capt. Sinnott was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Louise C. Sinnott. He was born in the Borough of Manhattan in New York City. He grew up there, attending Parochial School, and boxed as an amateur weight at the New York Athletic Club. He received an appointment to the Naval Academy, was a member of the Varsity Boxing Team and graduated in 1938. He was at the defense of Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack, served in the Pacific theater through 1943, then participated in convoy duty in the Atlantic theater through VE Day.

After the war, his commands included The John D. Henley DD-391, Destroyer Division 42, Destroyer Squadron 10. The fleet training center N.O.B. Chief of Staff, Commander Training Command Atlantic. He retired from active duty in 1968. He was an Air Pollution Control Officer for the State of Virginia from 1974 through 1988.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by two sons, Michael E. Sinnott and Christopher J. Sinnott; their wives, Jean H. Sinnott and Ann Morgan, and his granddaughter, Jennifer Louise Sinnott, the daughter of Michael and Jean. He was a dependable shipmate, a loyal classmate and a great and generous friend.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek Chapel by Father James E. Parke. Burial with military honors will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Heart Association. Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
