U.S. Naval Reserve Capt. Edward E. Stribling, born in Charlotte, N.C., on Feb. 21, 1943, began his final voyage on Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997, after his hard-fought battle with cancer.
After serving as a Marine, Capt. Stribling graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point, N.Y., in 1967. He was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served on active duty as a surface warfare officer with tours in Vietnam and the Mediterranean until 1972, when he began his illustrious civilian maritime career commanding numerous ships.
A master mariner with an unlimited license, Capt. Stribling was employed by U.S. Marine Management, Inc., Norfolk, where he was the director of operations. He was a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers of Great Britain.
Capt. Stribling had been recognized by U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Department of Professional Development and Career Services for outside contributions to the department and also received a lifetime professional achievement award from the academy for ``exemplifying the best traditions of the Corps.''
Capt. Stribling is survived by his sister, Catherine Renzulli of Chicago, Ill.; her sons, James and Christopher Atkinson of Charlotte, N.C.; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Arthur Wayne Stribling; his mother, Mrs. Louise Stribling Sloan; and his step-father, Mr. Calvin C. Sloan.
A private memorial service will be held at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, Virginia Beach. Capt. Stribling's remains will be scattered at sea.
