Joe Blount Davenport Jr., 74, of the 600 block of Gatling St., died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at his home.
He was a native of Bertie County and a member of Windsor United Methodist Church. Mr. Davenport was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He attended Duke University and East Carolina College. He was a former member of the Windsor Jaycees, the Board of Education, and served on the N.C. Oil Jobers Association Board. He was a member of Charity Lodge (NU)5. He was a farmer and merchant and retired as a rural mail carrier after 35 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Anne Gillam Davenport; a daughter, Joanne Davenport of Wilmington; a son, Joe B. Davenport III of Windsor; and grandchildren, Whitley and Brad Davenport of Windsor and Bridger Costin of Wilmington.
A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. today in Windsor United Methodist Church by the Rev. Clyde Denny and the Rev. Dwight Austin. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Roanoke-Chowan Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910, to Windsor United Methodist Church, 408 S. Queen St., Windsor, N.C. 27983, or to your favorite charity.
