DREW C. WILSON/The Virginian-Pilot

Howard Sutton, above, a welder at the North Carolina Department of

Transportation Ferry Maintenance Facility at Manns Harbor, makes

final cuts on Monday through the belly of the 160-foot ferry

Carteret. A 60-foot section will be added in the middle to make the

Carteret a 220-foot ferry. The lengthening of the ferry will be the

first of its kind for the Manns Harbor maintenance facility. The

Carteret, at right, is scheduled to return to service between

Ocracoke, Cedar Island, and Swan Quarter on Memorial Day 1998.
