Maria Elaine Carmel, 44, died Sept. 29, 1997, in her residence.

Mrs. Carmel was the office manager at The Dog and Cat Hospital, Norfolk, for the last 10 years. She was very active in animal welfare issues. She was a past member of the board of the Norfolk S.P.C.A. Mrs. Carmel was the benefactor to countless abused animals.

Survivors include her husband, Stephen Carmel; a daughter, Stephanie Carmel; and a brother, Harold ``Skip'' Sharp.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel. A chapel service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.
