SHIRLEY S. TATE

Shirley Lee Spangler Tate, 54, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 3, 1997.

Mrs. Tate was a native of Norfolk and a Yorktown resident since 1988. She was a member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church and former treasurer and member of Hampton-Newport News Christian Women's Club and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross.

She was a former resident of England, Germany and Guam with her husband while he was serving with the U.S. Air Force. She was also a member of various Bible studies.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother who leaves behind to cherish her memory a husband of 33 years, Dr. Samuel W. Tate; two sons, Lt. Samuel L. Tate, U.S. Navy, and his wife, Amy, of San Diego, Calif. and Capt. Andrew J. Tate, U.S. Marine Corps and his wife, Milli, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a grandson, Joseph Andrew Tate; a sister, Betty L. Gustafson of Freeland, Mich.; two nephews, Richard H. Gustafson of South Carolina and Christopher L. Gustafson of Michigan.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Veteran's Memorial Gardens, Hampton, with a memorial service to follow at 2:30 p.m. in Yorkminster Presbyterian Church, Yorktown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday in Amory Funeral Home, Grafton.
