Mrs. Evelyn Walker Clarke of ``Cedaredge'' in the 4200 block of Elbow Road, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 1997.
Born in Norfolk, Mrs. Clarke had lived in Virginia Beach for most of her long and active life, contributing her skill in leadership and organization throughout a wide range of community service.
A lifetime member of the Virginia Camellia Society, as well as the American Camellia Society, Mrs. Clarke is well known locally for her development of the lovely pink camellia which bears her name, the ``Mrs. Lyman Clarke.''
Mrs. Clarke was a member and former president of the Kempsville Woman's Club (1955-56), president of Welcome Wagon of Virginia Beach (1989-91) and president of the Princess Anne Court House PTA (1957-58). She was a Girl Scout leader, serving as a member of the board and later as an officer of the Virginia Tidewater Area Council of the Girls Scouts of America. A member of Kempsville Baptist Church, she was for many years principal of their Vacation Bible School.
As a Realtor with Womble Realty, Evelyn Clarke was one of the first women to be awarded membership in the Million Dollar Sales Club by the Norfolk Board of Realtors. She received, as well, their Distinguished Salesman Award in 1970.
Mrs. Clarke is survived by her two sons, Lyman Stuart Clarke Jr. and his wife, Barbara Watson Clarke, Bruce Walker Clarke and his wife, Josephine Adamson Clarke; her grandsons, Burleigh Stuart Clarke and Bruce Houston Clarke, all of Virginia Beach; her sister, Mrs. Owen Gomer, and her niece, Miss Edith Anne Gomer, both of Norfolk.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Pleasant Hall Chapel by the Rev. Joseph L. Gwynn. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery later that afternoon. Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall Chapel, is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
