GERALD A. GURICK

Gerald ``Jerry'' A. Gurick, 51, a retired Navy captain, died Oct. 10, 1997, at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He courageously battled cancer for six years.

Born in Wagner, S.D., on Oct. 17, 1945, Jerry grew up in Swoyersville, Pa. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Kingston, Pa., and Kings College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He joined the Navy in 1967 and retired after 26 years. He was a naval aviator and flew F-4 Phantoms and F/A-18 Hornets. He had the honor and privilege of being the first commanding officer of VFA-136 ``Knighthawks'' at Cecil Field, Fla. He was a member of Church of the Holy Family, Virginia Beach, and was an avid fisherman and golfer.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard F. Gurick.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria J. Gurick; his mother, Fridea Gurick of Swoyersville; a son, Michael A. Gurick of Powder Springs, Ga.; a daughter, Karen L. Gurick of Richmond; a sister, Regina M. Guarin of Poway, Calif.; three brothers, Leonard E. Gurick of Miami, Fla., and Frederick J. Gurick and Keith E. Gurick, both of San Antonio, Texas.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Church of the Holy Family by Father Richard Mooney. Burial will be at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery with full military honors. There will be a Christian Wake service held in the funeral home Sunday at 7 p.m., with visitation until 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Association. H.D.
