J. Paul Spence, 84, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, in a local hospital.
He was the son of the late Susie Hudgins and John Paul Spence, who was the first Supervisor of Instruction for the Norfolk Public School System. He was raised in Norfolk and Elizabeth City, N.C., and was a lifelong Baptist.
Mr. Spence worked for many years for United States Fidelity and Guaranty Co. in Baltimore, Md., until his retirement in 1977, after which he moved back to Norfolk. He was a World War II veteran of the Canadian Army, serving in the Toronto Scottish Regiment where he was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery in combat.
Survivors include a sister, Lota Spence Reid of Williamsburg; a brother, Judson Cauthen Spence of Charleston, S.C.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles H. Spence Sr.
A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. David W. Davenport. Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters or to the charity of the donor's choice. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
