DORSEL S. MOYERS

The Rev. Dorsel Samuel Moyers, 74, of the 3300 block of Ocean Shore Ave. died Oct. 15, 1997, in a local hospital.

Born in Claibourne, Tenn., he had retired as Pastor Emeritus of St. John's Baptist Church of Virginia Beach. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church, Middlesborough, Ky. The Rev. Moyers was active in the Norfolk Baptist Association and held many offices including moderator. He was a member of various committees of the Virginia Baptist General Association, and a member of the board of directors for Western Lee County Health Clinic. He had formerly held pastorates at Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church, Norfolk, New Market Baptist Church, Newport News, and Corinth Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, N.C. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, the Rev. Moyers was a graduate of Carson-Newman College and attended Southeastern Theological Seminary.

Survivors include his wife, Pearl Noah Moyers; two sisters, Phillis Blaylock of Louisville, Ky., and Mary Moyers of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Kenneth Moyers of Rome, Ga., Billy Moyers of Dearborn, Mich., and Jerome Moyers of Mentor, Ohio.

A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in St. John's Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, by the Revs. Lowe Norman, Hank Brooks and Walker Stockburger. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park with a graveside service at 10 a.m. Saturday. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. today. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial gifts be made to St. John's Baptist Church, 2309 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23456, or to Great Neck Baptist Church, 1020 General Jackson Drive, Virginia Beach, Va. 23454. Honorary pallbearers will be the ministers of the Norfolk Baptist Association.
