Community meeting

on road improvement

project will be today

There will be a community meeting at 2 p.m. today at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 125 County St., to discuss the East Washington Street Improvement Project and the Finney Avenue Connector Project.

The city plans to construct a road through the Lloyd Place and West Jericho neighborhoods to connect Finney Avenue with East Washington Street and White Marsh Road. The new road, which is designed to relieve some congestion along the East Washington Street corridor, would be built parallel to Division Street.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2001 at an estimated cost of $1.7 million.

Many citizens, however, are concerned that the project will disrupt their community, devalue property and add to traffic congestion, said Helen Daughtrey, one of the meeting's organizers.

Vice Mayor Charles F. Brown will answer questions regarding the project.

Oliver North campaigns

in town for Dan Evans

With gubernatorial candidates flinging millions around the airwaves, how does a mere House of Delegates hopeful get any attention or squeeze a little money to buy ads and print leaflets?

By bringing in the big guns.

Lt. Col. Oliver North, no stranger to politicking, having lost his own bid for the U.S. Senate, is to appear today in Portsmouth at a fund raiser for D.R. ``Dan'' Evans.

Evans is the Republican candidate in the 79th House District that covers parts of Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk. He is opposed by Johnny S. Joannou, a Democrat.

The program will be held at the MAX Restaurant at 9 a.m., and a chance to breakfast with the former Marine will cost $30. For more information, call 397-7979.

Larry Elgart band concert

postponed until December

A concert by the Larry Elgart band, originally scheduled for Sunday at Willett Hall, has been postponed. The concert has been rescheduled for Dec. 7 at 3 p.m.

Ports Events Director Linda Lamm said she was pleased to change the date of the big band performance to the anniversary of Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor.

``Elgart has promised to play music that was popular in 1941 and during the years of World War II,'' Lamm said.

VIRGINIA BEACH

Princess Anne post office

to be dedicated Monday

The city's new Princess Anne post office in the Municipal Center will be dedicated during a public ceremony Monday morning.

The 32,000-square-foot facility - the Beach's largest - features 1,500 post office boxes, a 24-hour lobby and a postal store with self-serve shopping.

The 8:30 a.m. dedication will take place at the station, 2509 George Mason Drive. An open house and tours will follow. For details, call 463-5698.

Community workshop offers

free volunteer training

The Community Services Board will conduct its third annual Citizens Helping Citizens Conference today at Booker T. Washington High School from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The workshop offers free training sessions for community volunteers who work with substance abusers, those with mental illness and mental retardation and the homeless.

Keynote lunch speaker is Marie McDemmond, president of Norfolk State University.

Space is available for all seminars. Registration and a continental breakfast are at 8 a.m.

Ambassador will address

Euro-American partnership

Andre Adam, the Belgian ambassador to the United States, will address the World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads Thursday on ``Euro-American Partnership: A Belgian View.''

Adam previously served as ambassador to Zaire and Algeria.

The program at the Norfolk Airport Hilton includes a reception at 6:15 p.m., dinner at 7 and the speech at 8. The public is invited. The cost is $17 for council members, $20 for nonmembers and $10 for students. For reservations, call 461-3664 by noon Tuesday.

Used Book Sale benefits

the Norfolk Public Library

Thousands of used books will be sold at bargain prices at the Friends of the Norfolk Public Library Used Book Sale at Kirn Memorial Library this weekend.

The sale began Friday and will continue today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the second floor of the library.

Hardcover books sell for $1; paperbacks sell for 50 cents. All reference books are $1 and children's books are 25 cents per inch of the stack height.

The books come from many sources, including donations from individuals and organizations as well as a weeding of the Norfolk Public Library's collection. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Norfolk Public Library.

Court reporting firm has

been relocated, renamed

Anthony & Associates Inc., a Norfolk-based court reporting firm, recently announced its name change, incorporation and relocation from Virginia Beach to downtown Norfolk.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held tonight at the Mall Restaurant located at the corner of St. Pauls Blvd. and Main Street from 6 to 9 p.m. The expansion makes Anthony & Associates the first black-owned court reporting agency in Hampton Roads.

The firm was formerly known as Michelle Anthony & Associates.

ALSO. . . Virginia Beach - The American Association of Retired Persons is attempting to establish a new local AARP chapter in the Seatack area. COMING UP TODAY

Norfolk - A town hall meeting with Councilman Randy Wright, Kent Winquist and the Little Creek Road Advisory Committee will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the Azalea Inn, 2344 E. Little Creek Road. Police Chief Melvin C. High will be the guest speaker. Councilman Wright will provide updates on an increase in the cigarette tax and East Little Creek Road. The meeting is open to the public.

SUNDAY

Portsmouth - Nathan McCall, a Portsmouth native whose autobiography ``Makes Me Wanna Holler'' made the New York Times Bestsellers list, will be at Waldenbooks at Chesapeake Square on Sunday afternoon.

From 2 to 3 p.m., McCall will be available to sign copies of his new book, ``What's Going On,'' and discuss both books.
