HOUSE FIRE IN NORFOLK INJURES 3 POLICE OFFICERS, 1 FIREFIGHTER

Three Norfolk police officers and a city firefighter were slightly injured Sunday while battling a house fire in the 2800 block of Grandy Ave., authorities said.

The blaze caused an estimated $20,000 worth of damage, and killed a dog trapped inside, said Jack Goldhorn, a Fire Department spokesman. The owners were not home.

The police officers arrived first at the scene, about 8:30 a.m., and thought they heard someone inside. When they tried to break into the home to help, they were driven back by the smoke, and later taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, Goldhorn said.

The officers were released by noon Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The firefighter suffered minor injuries when an object fell on his arm at the house, Goldhorn said.

Investigators believe faulty electrical wiring sparked the fire, which took about 25 minutes to extinguish, Goldhorn said. KEYWORDS: FIRE INJURIES
