STRONG WINDS AND HIGH SEAS SNAG ANGLERS

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was good Saturday, but slow Sunday because of strong winds and high seas.

Kitty Hawk Pier reported a 35-pound drum landed late Friday night by Tom Harris of Elizabeth City. Quite a few spot, some keeper puppy drum, a few croaker and small bluefish were taken Saturday. No action was reported Sunday because of the weather.

Drum weighing 35 and 50 pounds, a few spot and bluefish were caught Saturday on Avalon Pier. A few spot were taken Sunday morning, but afternoon fishing was nil.

Spot and croaker fishing were good on Nags Head Pier early Saturday afternoon. Some bluefish also were taken. Fishermen were scarce and no fish were taken Sunday.

Anglers on Jennette's Pier caught plenty of spot Friday night and again from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. One keeper puppy drum was landed from the pierSunday, and several smaller puppy drum were released.

Lots of spot, a few keeper puppy drum and scattered sea mullet were taken from Outer Banks Pier Saturday. Little action was reported Sunday.

South of Oregon Inlet, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier landed three king mackerel weighing from 9 to 21 pounds, lots of spot, some 2- to 3-pound bluefish and scattered sea mullet Saturday.

Spot, sea mullet and a few puppy drum were taken on Rodanthe Pier Sunday morning before strong currents put an end to fishing.

A 23-pound red drum, two 5-pound black drum, spot, bluefish and some keeper flounder were decked on Avon Pier Saturday.

Spot and mullet fishing was good Sunday morning. A couple of yearling drum also were taken. Gusty winds put a halt to afternoon action.

A 14-pound king mackerel, bluefish and small puppy drum were landed Saturday on Frisco Pier. Lots of small pompano, good-sized spot and a few sea mullet were landed Sunday morning until 11 a.m., when the wind and rain put a stop to the fishing.

Small bottom fish and a few bluefish were caught by surfcasters along the northern beaches Saturday. Little action was reported Sunday because of the weather.

Bottom fish, bluefish and some trout were hauled in around Oregon Inlet Saturday. Catwalk action on the Bonner Bridge was good Sunday with spot, flounder and speckled trout taken.

Plenty of pompano, some mullet, bluefish and a few puppy drum were beached by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton Saturday. Sunday's fishing was slow.

A few drum and jacks were landed at Cape Point Saturday morning. Flounder, sea mullet and croaker were taken along the south beach during the day.

A few drum were caught at the Cape early Sunday, but action was nonexistent the rest of the day.

Lots of small pompano, small bluefish, some nice flounder and a 6-pound puppy drum were taken in the surf from Ramp 55 to Hatteras Inlet Saturday. Bluefish were landed at Hatteras Inlet Sunday.

Charter craft stayed at the dock over the weekend at Oregon Inlet and Hatteras because of the weather.

The water temperature was 66 degrees Monday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 70 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island.
