POLICE IDENTIFY SUFFOLK SHOOTING VICTIM; NO ARRESTS MADE IN CASE

A man who was found dead in the Churchland area of Chesapeake on Wednesday night had been shot and killed in nearby northern Suffolk, police said Thursday.

The man was identified as Daniel Council III, 34, of the 2500 block of Milum Drive, Suffolk. He had been shot in the head with a large-caliber handgun as he sat in a small, gray pickup in the Wynnewood section, police spokesman Mike Simpkins said.

The shooting happened about 9:25 p.m. on Camellia Drive at the intersection of Brookwood Drive. Council and a woman, who was driving the pickup, had stopped to talk to several people on the street and a confrontation developed, Simpkins said.

As shots were fired, the woman sped away, driving to Domino's Pizza in the 3300 block of Western Branch Blvd. for help, he said.

Police had investigated reports of a shooting in Wynnewood, near Interstate 664 and U.S. Route 17, but found nothing.

By Thursday evening, police had not released a motive for the shooting, the city's sixth homicide this year. No arrests have been made.
