John Martin Gittinger, 78, died Oct. 25, 1997.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., he was a retired chief warrant officer of the U.S. Navy with 30 years of service. He also retired from the Newport News Shipyard after 15 years. Mr. Gittinger was a member of Retired Officers Association, Hampton Roads Chapter, American Association of Retired Persons, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tidewater Post No. 4809, American Legion Post 141, USS Colorado Alumni Association, USS Harris Alumni Association and Fleet Reserve Association. He also served on the USS Kiowa, USS Tidewater, USS Chuckawan and USS Aldebaron. He served in World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Gittinger; a daughter, Faith Anne Fout of Virginia Beach; a son, George M. Gittinger of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Church of the Ascension by Fr. James E. Parke. Burial will be in Hampton National Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
