CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION: ***************************************************************** A label Tuesday on the Public Safety page graphic showing property crime rates in South Hampton Roads inadvertently said ``Violent crimes per 1,000 residents.'' It should have said ``Property crimes per 1,000 residents.'' Correction published Wednesday, October 29, 1997. ***************************************************************** BEACH PROPERTY CRIME RATE CLIMBED SLIGHTLY IN '96

The property crime rate in Virginia Beach increased slightly - about 2 percent - last year, but the city continues to have the region's second lowest rate, next to Chesapeake.

Of the property crime rates, arson increased the most, 16 percent. Burglary increased 5 percent, larceny increased 3 percent and auto thefts dropped 14 percent.

There were almost 20,000 property crimes reported in the city last year. ILLUSTRATION: Staff Graphic by Michael Hall/The Virginian-Pilot
