A 24-year-old man has been charged with shaking to death the infant girl he was baby-sitting.
Arrested Friday evening at home was Juan G. Hernandez of the 1200 block of Daybreak Circle. He was charged with second-degree murder, Officer Mia Phillips said. That charge requires that a killing occur with malice but not premeditation.
The victim was 3-month-old Sierra Autumn Burke of the first block of Pennington Ave.
Hernandez called 911 the afternoon of Oct. 9 to say the girl he was baby-sitting in the 1200 block of Daybreak Circle had started to choke, Phillips said. The infant was hospitalized with injuries ``consistent with shaken-baby syndrome,'' she said.
The baby, on life support, died on Oct. 12. An autopsy confirmed shaken-baby syndrome.
Hernandez remained in custody Saturday. Phillips said she didn't know what relationship he had to the child. KEYWORDS: CHILD ABUSE MURDER SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME
