Hearing postponed for woman charged with cutting officers
A preliminary hearing for a Fernwood Shores woman charged with cutting two police officers with a knife was postponed Monday pending a psychiatric evaluation.
Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Richard Campbell and defense lawyer William R. O'Brien filed a joint motion to determine Carlett Karim's competency at the time of the incident and whether she can stand trial. Karim has been charged with two counts of malicious wounding and one count of attempted malicious wounding.
``I think that she had a psychotic episode then, and she was not aware of what was going on,'' O'Brien said of the Aug. 22 incident. Karim had not had any such episodes in the past and hasn't had any since, O'Brien said.
The preliminary hearing was postponed to Jan. 14.
Meanwhile, the police department still has not released its internal investigation into the incident, in which Karim was shot by one of four officers at the scene.
