FIONA APPLE TALKS TURKEY

If you were at Fiona Apple's show at the Boathouse in Norfolk last week, you heard the 20-year-old singer deliver between-song social commentaries. If not, let your fingers do the walking to hear her tout vegetarianism.

Before her show, Apple toured the Norfolk offices of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and recorded a message on the organization's holiday hotline. In the brief spot, she talks about enjoying Thanksgiving without turkeys.

``Each year, the Butterball turkey company sponsors a turkey talk line to answer questions about proper cooking techniques . . . There is no proper way to kill and cook these beautiful birds,'' she laments.

She goes on to drone: ``Millions of people are learning that a vegetarian diet is the healthiest choice for themselves, the Earth and the animals.'' Apple is one of those said million. She's a vegan. (For you carnivous readers, that means she eats NO animal products. No KFC. No milk. No Ben & Jerry's!)
