Less than two years after winning county approval for its Alpengeist roller coaster, Busch Gardens is hoping to build an even bigger one.
The theme park, which opened the inverted, twisted Alpengeist this year, has applied to James City County for permission to build another coaster, this one 250 feet tall - about 15 feet higher than Alpengeist and about 100 feet higher than DrachenFire. Busch Gardens officials would not release details Friday on how the ride would look.
Busch Gardens spokeswoman Deborah DeMarco said the new ride, if approved, would not be ready for the upcoming 1998 season, and said that she could not give an exact date on when it would be built. The new coaster would be the park's sixth.
Busch Gardens wants to place the coaster close to the front of the park to keep it as far away as possible from residential development, county planner Paul Holt said.
