Recently I read an article in The Virginian-Pilot that indicated Mrs. Debbie Ritter had been denied reappointment by the Chesapeake City Council to the Planning Commission. It came as quite an unwelcome surprise.
My husband and I frequently follow the meetings of both the City Council and the Planning Commission via our local cable station and as reported in The Clipper. I feel Mrs. Ritter was an asset to the Planning Commission and the city of Chesapeake. She always appeared to be very well prepared regarding any issue that came before the commission. Mrs. Ritter has continually shown that she truly cared about what was best for the city and its residents.
The Planning Commission has lost one of its most valuable members.
The newspaper article mentioned Mrs. Ritter sometimes asked for ``expensive'' studies to be done in order to best determine the outcome of items before the commission. It also indicated she asked ``thorough'' questions of developers and residents. Isn't that what a city official should be doing? Or are appointments to the various city commissions ``honorary'' popularity contests?
For shame, City Council members. I'm very disappointed that some of Mrs. Ritter's caliber was rejected by the council.

Oak Ridge Drive Congrats to bands!
Congratulations to every student who is a member of a high school marching band! It has been my pleasure this fall to see several marching-band competitions. I am totally impressed by their talent, their commitment, their desire to do their best and their seemingly tireless dedication to their band director.
With all our worries today about students who have wandered away from a sense of right and wrong, these marching band students have learned skills that will last them a lifetime.
If you have an opportunity to go to a marching-band competition, go! It is filled with wonderful music, outstanding students and a beautiful precision that is missing from many areas of society today.
My thanks to Mr. Rob Carroll and Mr. Mike Oare of Great Bridge High School for their dedication to their band students!
