MOVIES TONIGHT

THE JACKAL - Bruce Willis is a ruthless assassin on the move. He's the subject of a global manhunt in a race against the clock to stop him before he can complete his deadly assignment. Based on the film ``Day of the Jackal,'' the cast includes Sidney Poitier, Richard Gere and Diane Venora. R

ONE NIGHT STAND - Director Mike Figgis' new drama tells of a one-night stand between Wesley Snipes and Nastassja Kinski. Perhaps not a great first-date movie. R

CAREER GIRLS - Lynda Steadman and Katrin Cartlidge play former college friends who meet in London six years later. It's the first film from director Mike Leigh since the Oscar-nominated ``Secrets and Lies.'' It's character-driven, with a persistent British accent. A rare buddy film about women. R

THE LITTLE MERMAID - Disney takes on the competition, re-releasing this now-classic 1989 production a week before Fox brings out its rival ``Anastasia.'' It's still a gorgeous show, with hummable songs, but will folks head to the theaters to see a show they've already got on video? G

THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO LITTLE - Our favorite snide guy, Bill Murray, is back in this screwball comedy about shadowy cat-and-mouse dealings in London. Also starring Peter Gallagher and Joanne Whalley. PG

THE MYTH OF FINGERPRINTS - Just in time for turkey day comes this story of a New England family whose suppressed tensions bubble over during a Thanksgiving reunion. The ensemble cast includes Roy Scheider, Blythe Danner, Julianne Moore and Noah Wyle (from TV's ``ER''). Opens Monday at the Naro. R

THE END OF VIOLENCE - Billed as a ``satirical thriller,'' this movie takes on mass communication, violence and paranoia. Bill Pullman plays an action-movie producer who goes into hiding after a carjacking shatters his world. His wife (Andie MacDowell) appears to seize control of his empire. And Gabriel Byrne is the mastermind behind an elaborate surveillance system the government is testing in L.A. Opens Wednesday at the Naro. R ILLUSTRATION: Color photos
