WILLIAM MARSHALL JR.

William Marshall Jr. died Saturday, Nov. 8, 1997, at Hill Cottage Farm near Wardtown, Va. He was 71.

A native of Norfolk, Mr. Marshall was a prominent international architect who co-founded and directed the worldwide operations of McGaughy, Marshall & McMillan (later MMM Design Group) for many years. Long active in the regional and state branches of the American Institute of Architects, he served as national president of the organization in 1975. Among his many civic pursuits in Tidewater, Mr. Marshall was president of Norfolk's Hermitage Foundation.

Mr. Marshall was born Nov. 24, 1925, in Ashland, Ky., to William and Leah Powers Marshall. He attended Virginia Military Academy before volunteering for the Army in 1943. After World War II, he was graduated from the University of Virginia's School of Architecture and did post-graduate work at Columbia University in New York City.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Ellingston Marshall; and five children, William Marshall III of Arlington, Va., Jenefer F. Marshall of Sointula, B.C. Canada; Charles R. Marshall of Arlington, Elizabeth Marshall English of Gaithersburg, Md., and Christopher C. Marshall of Arlington. He is also survived by his sister, Ann Reid Preston of Monterey, Va., as well as three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Marshall Family Cemetery at Hill Cottage Farm. Doughty Funeral Home, Exmore, is in charge of arrangements. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Hospice Care of the Eastern Shore, 15440 King St., Belle Haven, Va. 23306. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
