Charles Baker ``Charlie'' Harding, 90, died Monday, Nov. 17, 1997.
Mr. Harding was retired as director of Southampton County Bank in December 1977. He had served the bank since 1949 in various capacities including president and chairman of the board of directors. Mr. Harding graduated from Greensville County High School, attended Washington and Lee University and Randolph-Macon College where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
He spent his life in the banking business in Southside Virginia, starting in Petersburg at the Virginia National Bank at age 21. Later, he accepted the position of assistant cashier at the Bank of Capron, Va., where he was employed for nine years. In 1949, he was offered the position of cashier of the Southampton County Bank, Courtland, which he held until 1968, at which time he was made the executive vice president. Mr. Harding has twice been the chairman of the Tri-County Banker's Association and has held, in connection with the Virginia Banker's Association, the position of ``Key Banker'' in this area for many years. He was a past district treasurer of the Ruritan Club, past member of the Lions Club and member and vestryman of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Courtland.
Mr. Harding is survived by his wife, Virginia Hamlet Harding; two sons, C.B. Harding Jr. of Emporia and H. Hamlet Harding of Courtland; three granddaughters, Elizabeth H. Marshall, Laura H. Dewey and Marsha R. Harding; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Owen Funeral Home, Jarratt, Va. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Emporia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or the Courtland Volunteer Rescue Squad. KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
