Dare County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Geneva Perry said Monday she has an idea that could help address school funding woes: a 1 cent county sales tax on everything but food.
Perry said that, although taxes are unpopular, a sales tax would not hit as hard and would be funded largely by tourists.
County Finance Officer David Clawson told her the tax could generate about $5 million a year. The funds would be put toward school capital improvements and maintenance.
Perry said at Monday's board meeting that she was interested in feedback on the idea.
