KULIS NAMED VICE PRESIDENT OF HOSPITAL: Robert M. Kulis was named vice president of Lake Taylor Hospital. He was director of facility services at Riverside Regional Medical Center. He replaces William L. Bishop who retired in July after 39 years.
NORFOLK WEAPONS FIRM GETS NAVY CONTRACT: Atlantic Ordnance and Gyro Inc. has won a $1 million Navy contract for repairs on the guided-missile cruiser Vella Gulf. The Norfolk company has long specialized in combat systems support, but it entered ship repair in the past year after the Navy changed the way it contracts for combat systems installation, said President Edmund W. McNutt. Work on the Vella Gulf will begin Dec. 8 at the Norfolk Naval Base, just as Atlantic Ordnance wraps up repair jobs on the guided-missile frigate Klakring there and the guided-missile destroyer Stout at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The Vella Gulf contract, which lasts until February, should keep Atlantic Ordnance's 173 workers employed through the holidays, McNutt said.
CREDIT SERVICE APPOINTS WHITEHURST COLLECTION MANAGER: Dennis E. Whitehurst was named a collection manager at Credit Service, an accounts receivable management and collections firm. He will oversee the company's collection operations and had worked at Household Credit Services in Chesapeake.
APPLEBEE'S RESTAURANT BREAKS GROUND: Applebee's Restaurant, a Madison, Ga.-based family dining chain, broke ground Wednesday at the Norfolk Naval Station. The restaurant, the first restaurant public/private venture at the Naval Station, will be built across from the Main Gate Movie Theater. The restaurant is to open in early March.

GURNEE NAMED VICE PRESIDENT OF REAL ESTATE AT DOLLAR TREE: Dollar Tree Stores promoted Robert G. Gurnee to vice president of real estate. Gurnee, the former property controller with Goodman, Segar, Hogan and Hoffler Properties, joined Dollar Tree in 1994 as director of budgeting and analysis. In 1995, he was promoted to director of real estate.

TIMBERLAKE JOINS MORTGAGE CORPORATION: Mary Timberlake was named a loan officer with Chase Manhattan Mortgage Corp. She has been a mortgage banker for 14 years and was the former manager of Essex Mortgage and Molton, Allen and Williams Corp.

NEWPORT NEWS SHIPBUILDING GETS TWO NAVY CONTRACTS: The Navy awarded Newport News Shipbuilding two contract extensions worth a combined $57.8 million. One is a $33.9 million option to extend the Peninsula shipyard's participation in the engineering and design of the Seawolf-class attack submarine.
