Mrs. Flora Elks Toler, 84, formerly of 410 E. Third St. died in Britthaven of Washington Thursday night, Nov. 27, 1997.
Mrs. Toler was born Jan. 26, 1913, in Grimesland, the daughter of the late William Silas and Mattie Flora Godley Elks. She was married to Clifton L. Toler Sr., who died Oct. 1, 1987. She was a retired retail merchant, being co-owner of Al-Jay's until her retirement.
Mrs. Toler was a member of the First Christian Church, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, the Pineville Home Extension Club, the Washington Woman's Club, and the Washington Garden Club. She was an avid bridge player and participated in regional and national tournaments. She was a member and Advanced Senior Master of the American Contract Bridge League.
Survivors include her daughters, Monna Jay Cutler and her husband, Clif, of Chesapeake, Brenda Toler Hill and her husband, Billy, of Washington, N.C., a son, Clifton L. Toler Jr., and his wife, Betsy, of Washington; a sister, Mrs. Lillian Elks Harrell of Chesapeake; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Paul Funeral Home Chapel, Washington, by Dr. John B. Ledford. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Daden Wolfe and her grandsons, Daren Hill, Ryan Hill, Paul Andrews, Neil Cutler and Rodney Ormond.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the home of her son, Clifton L. Toler Jr., and his wife, Betsy, at 105 N.
