Surrounded by his loving family and friends, Clinton Douglas Mackey Archer Sr., 74, of the 800 block of Philpotts Road went home to be with Jesus Nov. 26, 1997, at DePaul Medical Center.
He was born in Norfolk to the late I. Ruben and Aurelia Archer. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the CDI Inc. as a mechanical engineer of 38 years. He also taught at Norfolk State University for 10 years. He was an Army veteran who served in World War II.
Mr. Archer was a member of St. John's A.M.E. Church for more than 60 years. He was a member of the Steward Board for 31 years, serving under three pastors. A dedicated member, he was instrumental in assisting to design the educational building completed in 1988.
Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years and 11 months, Vernice Bell ``Granny'' Archer; two daughters and one son, Beverly A. Freeman, Vernice A. Pettaway, the Rev. Clinton D.M. Archer Jr. of Chesapeake; two sons-in-law, Robert B. Freeman, Tony L. Pettaway; a daughter-in-law, Evelyn J. Archer; six grandchildren, Crystal F. Vaughan, Sherron L. Puryear, Tracy M. Puryear, Robert B. Freeman Jr., LaToya K. Archer, Ericka N. Archer; two great-grandsons, Darius Vaughan, Daniel O. Frith; one grandson-in-law, Shawn A. Vaughan; three sisters, Aurelia C. Archer, Audrey A. Robinson, Leah A. Hunter, all of Norfolk; eight sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in St. John's A.M.E. Church, 545 E. Bute St., Norfolk, by the Rev. I.W. Knight Sr. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Hale Funeral Home is in charge. ILLUSTRATION: Photo KEYWORDS: DEATH OBITUARY
