American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry

Names and descriptions of new American varieties (clones) will be published after the requirements for registration are met. You are urged to submit proposed names to the A.R.S. Plant Registrar before they are actually used. There are thousands of names already in use and a name to be registered must not have been used before and must meet the requirements of the International Code of Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants - 1969.  Requests to register names must be submitted with A.R.S. Plant Registration Cards (revised 1972), completed as fully as possible to the A.R.S. Plant Registrar, Edwin K. Parker, Astoria, Or. A $2.00 FEE IS CHARGED FOR EACH NAME REGISTERED, and should accompany the completed registration. Proposed names and descriptions will be checked by the A.R.S. Plant Registrar and then sent to the International Rhododendron Registrar for final approval and registration.

BANGKOK: R. catawbiense var. album x ( R. dichroanthum x ( R. griffithianum x R. auriculatum )). Raised and introduced (1972) by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers openly funnel-shaped 3¼" across x 1¾" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, of heavy substance, light to strong purplish pink (Nickerson Color Fan) 5 R.P. 7.5/9, shading in center to pale orange yellow 7.5 Y.R. 10/4, reverse light to strong purplish pink 7.5 R.P. 7.5/10, with blotch and dorsal spotting, dark reddish orange 10 R. 4/9. Calyx minute, green. Truss 6½" across x 4¾" high, lax, with 13 flowers. Leaves 4 ¹ /8" x 1 ⁵ /8", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, dark green, retained 2 years. Plant rounded, branching moderately, 2' x 2' in 4 years. Blooms midseason. Hardy to -18° F.

CAIRO: ('Catalgla' x R. fortunei ) x ('Eidam' x R. williamsianum ). Raised and introduced (1972) by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 1¼" long, with 5 wavy lobes, white, with small blotch and peripheral spotting dorsally strong to vivid greenish yellow (Nickerson Color Fan) 7.5 Y 7.5/10. Calyx 1/16' green with red rim. Truss 6½" across x 6" high, ball-shaped, of 16 flowers. Leaves elliptic, acute, cuneate, mostly convex, 4 ⁵ /8" x 2", glabrous, dark green, retained 2 years. Plant rounded, branching moderately, 5' tall x 7' wide in 14 years. Blooms early midseason. Hardy to -20° F.

DOUGLAS R. STEPHENS: 'The Hon. Jean Marie de Montague' x unnamed large white. Raised and introduced (1972) by Mr. and Mrs. J. Freeman Stephens, Bellingham, WA. Buds rose red. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 4½" across x 4" long, with 5 wavy lobes, of heavy substance, spinel red (Horticultural Color Chart) 0023/1, with deep red blotch in throat and spots on dorsal 3 lobes. Truss 8" across x 9" high, conical, of 14 flowers. Leaves 7" x 3½", elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, dark green. plant upright, broad, branching well, 4' tall x 4-3/4' wide in 8 years. Blooms late April to early May. Hardy to at least -10° F.

ELISE WHIPPLE: 'Vulcan' x 'Boule' de Neige'. Raised (1965) by Ray Kruse. Named and introduced (1973) by Malcolm Whipple, St. James. L. I., N.Y. Buds red group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 54-A. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1 ⁷ /8" long, lobes 5, evenly rounded. Corolla white, shaded or suffused red group 54-A, reverse 54-A. Calyx 2/32", yellow green. Truss 5½" across by 3½" high, flat, of 15 flowers. Leaves 4" x 1½", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, yellow green group 147-A, retained 2 years. Plant 15" tall x 24" wide in 8 years, semi-dwarf. Blooms mid to late May. Hardy to at least -8° F.

FREEMAN R. STEPHENS: 'The Hon. Jean Marie de Montague' x unnamed large white. Raised and introduced (1972) by Mr. and Mrs. J. Freeman Stephens, Bellingham, WA. Buds cherry red (Horticultural Colour Chart) 722/1. Flowers openly funnel shaped, 4" across x 5" long, with 5 wavy lobes of heavy substance, slightly fragrant, cherry red 722/2, with very deep red spots on dorsal 3 lobes. Calyx A", light green and pink. Truss 8" across x 9" tall, conical, of 15 flowers. Leaves 6½" x 3", elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous; glossy, dark green. Plant broad, upright, branching well, 3½' tall x 5' wide in 8 years. Blooms late April to early May. Hardy to at least -10° F.

GIGI: of unknown parents. Raised by Charles Dexter. Named and introduced (1969) by Sidney Burns, Syossett, L. I., N.Y. Synonym: Ross #9 or Ross GG. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 2¼" long, with 6 wavy lobes, red purple group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 57-C, all lobes spotted red purple group 60-A. Calyx 3/32", green, Truss 6" across x 5" high, ball shaped, with 18 flowers. Leaves 4½" x 1 ⁷ /8", narrowly elliptic to elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, yellow green group 147-A, retained 3 years. Plant broad, branching well, 5' tall x 6' wide in 12 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -5° F.

GOLDEN SALMON: ('Atrosanguineum' x R. griersonianum ) x (Atrosanguineum' x R. griersonianum ) (One parent probably 'Atrier', probably a sibling cross and not a self). Raised and introduced by G. Guy Nearing. Cross by Joseph B. Gable. Flowers open-funnel-campanulate, 3½" across x 2" long, with 7 wavy lobes, of heavy substance, fragrant, red group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 38-A with blotch of radiating stripes orange red group 33-B. Calyx 1/32", orange red group 35-C. Truss 6" across x 4" high, lax of 10 flowers. Leaves 5" x 2", mostly elliptic, some narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, green group 137-B, retained 2 years. Plant first bloomed in 1966, 3' tall x 4' wide in 1972, broad, branching moderately with stiff, upright branches. Blooms in mid-May. Plant hardy to -15° F. Flower buds not quite hardy to this temperature.

JAMES C. STEPHENS: 'The Hon. Jean Marie de Montague' x unnamed large white. Raised and introduced (1972) by Mr. and Mrs. J. Freeman Stephens, Bellingham, WA. Buds deep pink. Flowers openly funnel-shaped 4½" x 4½", with 5 wavy lobes, of heavy substance, spinel red (Horticultural Colour Chart) 0023/3, with red blotch in throat and red spots on dorsal 3 lobes, with a few spots on lower lobes. Leaves 6" x 3", elliptic, acute, glabrous, glossy, dark green. Plant upright, broad; branching well, 3¾' tall x 5' wide in 8 years. Blooms late April to early May. Hardy to at least -10° F.

MARGARET ALICE: Unnamed dwarf pink x 'Elizabeth'. Raised and introduced (1966) by Mr. and Mrs. J. Freeman Stephens, Bellingham, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" x 3¼" with 6 wavy lobes, of heavy substance, tyrian rose (Horticultural Colour Chart) 24/2, with small red streaks in throat. Calyx minute, :rose. Truss ball-shaped, of 8 flowers. Leaves 3½" x 1½ ", elliptic, apiculate cuneate, glabrous, dark green. Plant broad, rounded, 3' tall x 3½' wide in 12 years, branches well, decumbent. Blooms late April. Hardy to at least -10° F.

MAY TIME: R. catawbiense var album x R. yakushimanum 'Koichiro Wada' F.C.C. Raised and introduced (1968) by Dr. David G. Leach. Buds deep purplish to strong purplish pink (Nickerson Color Fan) 5 R.P. 6.5/9. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2¼" across x 1-5/8" long, with 5 wavy lobes, white, with very faint dorsal ochre spots, outside faintly flushed on ribs deep purplish to strong purplish pink 5 R.P. 6.5/9. Calyx minute, yellowish tan, hairy. Truss 5½" across x 4" high, dome-shaped, of 12-14 flowers. Leaves 4¼" x 1-7/8", elliptic apiculate, cuneate, convex, glabrous, dark green, hairy first season, under surface tan at first then light green with brown areas bordering mid-rib, retained 3 years. Winter buds orange-tan. Plant semi-dwarf, broad, branching well, 22" tall x 28" wide in 4 years. Blooms early midseason. Hardy to -20° F.

MURIEL PEARCE: 'Anna' x 'Fusilier'. Raised and introduced (1970) by Owen Pearce, Orinda, Ca. Plant from Halfdan Lem. Buds dark red (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 824. F1owers openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, of heavy substance pale rose madder 23/3, edged 23/2, reverse at first 23/1, fading to 23/3, with plentiful dark red 824 spotting on upper 3 lobes, with a few spots throughout. Calyx ¼", red. Truss 8" across x 6½" high, conical, with 14-15 flowers. Leaves 4" x 1 3/8", mostly narrowly elliptic, some elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, dark green, retained 2-3 years. Plant upright, branches well, 6' tall x 4½' wide in 14 years. Blooms late April, early May. Hardy to at least 18° F.

NATHAN HALE: of unknown parents. Raised by Charles Dexter. Named and introduced (1971) by Dorothy Schlaikjer, Halesite, L.I., N.Y. Synonym: H.S. #10. Buds red group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 53-A. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2¼" long, with 6 or 7 wavy lobes, fragrant, red purple group 63-B, center 62-B, with blotch, red purple group 60-A. Calyx 1/16" green. Truss 6" across x 4½" high, ball-shaped, Leaves 5½" x 2½", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, yellow green group 147-A to B, retained 2 years. Plant rounded, 4' x 4' in 10 years. Blooms third quarter of May. Hardy to at least -5° F.

NUANCE: R. catawbiense var. album x (( R. neriiflorum x R. dichroanthum ) x R. discolor ). Raised and introduced (1968) by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, of heavy substance, pale orange yellow (Nickerson Color Fan) 7.5 Y.R. 10/4, broadly suffused around edge strong purplish pink 5 R.P. 7/9, with bold dorsal and some lateral rayed spotting, strong greenish yellow 7.5 x 7/9. Calyx minute, yellow. Truss 6" across x 5" tall, dome-shaped, of 14 flowers. Leaves 4" x 2", elliptic, apiculate, sub-cordate, glabrous, medium green, retained 2 years. Plant rounded, branching well, 20" tall x 24" wide in 4 years. Blooms late. Hardy to -18° F.

PARKER'S PINK: of unknown parents. Raised by Charles Dexter and John Parker. Introduced (1959) by Paul Vossberg. Synonym: Parker #1 PP. Described and pictured A.R.S. Quarterly Bulletin 25:3, 1971. Flowers openly funnel-shaped 3½" across x 2¼ " long with 6 or 7 wavy lobes, quite fragrant, red purple group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 63-B, fading to white in throat, with red purple group 60-A spots, dense in throat, thinning out to two rays of spots. Calyx 3/32", yellow green group 145-C. Leaves 6 - 5/8" x 2 - 7/8", elliptic, glabrous, yellow green group 147-A, retained 2 years. Plant broad, branching well, 4½' x 4½' in 10 years.  Blooms third quarter of May. Hardy to at least -10° F.

PARTY PINK: 'Mrs. Furnival' x R. catawbiense var. album Raised and introduced (1972) by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1¾" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, moderate purplish pink (Nickerson Color Fan) 2.5 R.P. 7/8 shading to pale purplish pink 2.5 R.P. 9/2 in center, with conspicuous dorsal and partial lateral spotting, strong yellow 2.5 Y 7/10. Calyx minute green. Truss 6" across x 5" tall, ball-shaped, with 18 flowers. Leaves 4¾" x 2½", broadly elliptic, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, dark green, retained 3 years. Plant broad, branching well, 22" tall x 30" wide in 4 years. Blooms midseason. Hardy to -22° F.

PEKING: ( R. catawbiense var. album x 'Hawk' g.) x ('La Bar's White' x 'Crest'). Raised by Dr. David G. Leach. Buds initially strong yellowish pink (Nickerson Color Fan) 10 R. 7/9. Flowers brilliant greenish yellow 7.5 Y 10/8, with dorsal blotch and sparse spotting dark red 2.5 R. 3/7, openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1¾" long, of heavy substance, with 6 evenly rounded lobes. Calyx with 2 dorsal lobes 1/8", greenish-yellow. Truss 5½" across x 5" tall, ball-shaped, of 14 to 15 flowers. Leaves 3-7/8" x 1¾", elliptic, acute to obtuse, rounded, glabrous, dark green, slightly concave, retained 2 years. Plant upright, branching well, 3' tall x 2' wide in 8 years. Blooms midseason. Hardy to -15° F.

PEPPERMINT STICK: 'Moser's Maroon' x R. yakushimanum . Raised and introduced (1971) by Thomas J. McGuire, Portland, Ore. Cross by Ben Lancaster. Buds red. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 1¾" long, 5 lobed, margins wavy, of heavy substance, white, edged red purple group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 57-D, lightly spotted yellow-brown on upper petal. White flower center appears star shaped. Truss conical 5" across x 6" high, with 21 flowers. Leaves 6" x 1" to 1-1/8", narrowly oblong, revolute, mucronate, cuneate, glabrous, dark green, under surface with thin, rusty indumentum. Leaves retained 4 years. Plant 33" tall x 44" wide in 10 years, rounded, semi-dwarf with stiff, upright branches. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 0° F.

RANGOON: 'Fanfare' x 'Gertrud Schale. Raised and introduced (1972) by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes, moderate to dark red. (Nickerson Color Fan) 2.5 R. 3.5/7. Calyx A", red. Truss 4" across x 3" tall, dome-shaped with 7 or 8 flowers. Leaves 3-3/8" x 1½", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, dark green, retained 2 years. Winter buds and leaf petioles dark red. Plant dwarf, broad, branching well, 28" tall x 44" wide in 16 years. Blooms early. Hardy to -15° F.

ROSLYN: 'Purpureum Elegans' x 'Everestianum'. Raised and introduced by Paul Vossberg, Westbury L. I., N.Y. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1½" long, with 5 frilled lobes, purple violet group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 82-D to paler center violet group 84-D, 82-D on reverse. Calyx 1/16", yellow green group 150-D. Truss 4" x 4", ball shaped, of 12 flowers. Leaves elliptic, apiculate, rounded, 5" x 2¾", glabrous, yellow green group 147-A, retained 2 years. Plant rounded, branching well, 4' x 4' in 10 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -10° F.

SCINTILLATION: of unknown parents. Raised by Charles Dexter and introduced (1959) by Paul Vossberg. Synonym: NYBG #67 or NY #1. Described and pictured A.R.S. Quarterly Bulletin 24:2, 1970. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 2" long, with 5 to 6 wavy lobes, fragrant, red purple group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 67-D, shading lighter toward center 69-C, densely spotted yellow green groups, 151-A to 152-D on upper 1 or 2 lobes, reverse 67-C. Calyx 1/8", green. Truss 6" across x 5" high, ball-shaped, of 11 to 15 flowers. Leaves oblong, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, glossy, green groups 137-A to 139-A. Plant broad, branching well, 4' tall x 5½' wide in 10 years. Blooms mid to late May. Hardy to at least -10° F.

SHANGHAI: ('Mrs. Furnival' x R. catawbiense var. album ) x unnamed, gold-blotched, mauve seeding. Raised and introduced (1972) by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, lobes often reflexed, 3¾" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly-rounded lobes, pale purplish pink (Nickerson Color Fan) 2.5 R.P. 9/2, suffused around edge light purplish pink 2.5 R.P. 8/5, with very bold spotting on dorsal and lateral lobes, strong orange yellow 7.5 Y.R. 7/11 at top to dark greenish yellow 7.5 Y 6/7 at base. Calyx minute, green. Truss 7 - 1/4 " across x 7" tall, ball-shaped, of 17-18 flowers. Leaves elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, 4¼" x 1 -7/8", medium green, retained 2 years. Plant broad, decumbent branching moderately, 6' tall x 8' wide in 11 years. Blooms late. Hardy to at least -10° F.

SINGAPORE: 'Fanfare' x 'Gertrud Schale'. Raised and introduced (1972) by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2¼" across, with 5 wavy lobes, moderate to strong red (Nickerson Color Fan) 2.5 R. 4.5/12 with pearly overlay. Calyx minute, light brown. Truss 5" across x 3" high, dome-shaped, with 13 flowers. Leaves 3¾" x 1¼", narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, medium green, retained 2 years. Dormant buds dark red. Plant semi-dwarf, broad, branching well, decumbent, 16" tall x 28" wide in 16 years. Blooms early. Hardy to -15° F.

TRUMPETER: (Red R. catawbiense hybrid x ( R. griersonianum x 'Romany Chal')) x ('Mars' x R. catawbiense var. rubrum ). Raised by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¼" x 1¾", with 5 evenly rounded lobes, of heavy substance, strong red (Nickerson Color Fan) 5 R. 3.5/14, with dorsal spotting, dark red 5 R. 3/7. Calyx minute, red. Truss 5" across x 3½" high, flat, of 10-15 flowers. Leaves 4 -1/8" x 1-7/8", elliptic, obtuse, cuneate, glabrous, dull, light green, retained 3 years. Plant broad, branching moderately, 4' tall x 6' wide in 15 years. Blooms late. Hardy to -15° F.

WHEATLEY: 'Westbury' x 'Meadowbrook'. Raised by Howard Phipps, Westbury, L.I., N.Y., introduced (1958) by Paul Vossberg. Synonym: H. Phipps #2. Pictured and described A.R.S. Quarterly Bulletin 26:2, 1972. Buds red group (R. H. S. Colour Chart) 55-A. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3¼" across x 2¼" long, with 6 or 7 frilled lobes, quite fragrant, red purple group 57-D, shaded 61-D toward outer edge, reverse 61-D, with rays in throat, yellow green group 144-C. Calyx 1/8", yellow green group 149-C. Truss 6½" across x 5" tall, ball shaped, of 16 flowers. Leaves 7" x 3", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, green group 137-B, retained 2 years. Plant broad, branching well, 4' x 4' in 10 years. Blooms third quarter of May. Hardy to at least -10° F.
