American Society Plant Registry

Names and descriptions of new American varieties (clones) will be published after the requirements for registration are met. You are urged to submit proposed names to the A.R.S. Plant Registrar before they are actually used. There are thousands of names already in use and a name to be registered must not have been used before and must meet the requirements of the International Code of Nomenclature of Cultivated Plants - 1969.  Requests to register names must be submitted with A.R.S. Plant Registration Cards (revised 1972), completed as fully as possible to the A.R.S. Plant Registrar, Edwin K. Parker, Astoria, Or. A $2.00 FEE IS CHARGED FOR EACH NAME REGISTERED, and should accompany the completed registration. Proposed names and descriptions will be checked by the A.R.S. Plant Registrar and then sent to the International Rhododendron Registrar for final approval and registration. Refer to A.R.S. Quarterly Jan. AMAZEMENT R. fortunei (hardy selection) x R. wardii Croceum Group. Cross 1961 by Donald L. Hardgrove. Raised after 1964, and introduced 1974 by Doris Royce, Remsenburg, NY. Described by Alfred Raustein and Mrs. Royce. Buds Red Group 51A R. H. S. Colour Chart Rhodonite Red). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1½" long, with 7 evenly rounded to wavy lobes, very fragrant, Yellow Group 3D. Calyx minute, green. Truss 6" across x 4" high, ball-shaped, somewhat lax; with 13 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 5" x 2¼", narrowly obovate, apiculate, cordate, glabrous, glossy, glaucous, Green Group 137B. Plant upright, broad, rounded, branching well with stiff branches, 6' tall x 7' wide in + 16 Years. Blooms mid to late May. Hardy to at least -8°F.

ANDREW LEUTTGEN An Eden Hybrid evergreen azalea. Parentage unstated.. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced by W. David Smith, Spring Grove, PA. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 3-4" across x 2½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes and rosette center, white. 10 stamens. Calyx ¼", yellow green. Inflorescence 4-5" across x 2½" high, 2-3-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 2" x ¾", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, moderate olive green 5GY 4/3 Nickerson , hairy on both surfaces. Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 4' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -15° F.

ANNE HARDGROVE 'C. P. Raffill' x 'Moser's Maroon'. Cross 1949 or 50), raised, and named by Donald L. Hardgrove. Purchased 1964 and introduced 1966 by Sidney Burns, Syosset, NY. Described by Richard Murcott. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3½" across x 2" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, Red Group 46A R. H. S. Colour Chart Currant Red). Calyx negligible. Truss 7" x 7", conical, with 11 flowers. Leaves held 1 year, 6" x 2" narrowly elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous Green Group 132A. Plant upright, branching rarely, 5' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least 0° F.

BARRYB R. catawbiense , R. maximum , and, perhaps, unknown hybrids F4. First cross about 1950. Cross (1969), raised, and introduced by W. David Smith, Spring Grove PA. Buds and corolla reverse deep reddish-purple 2.5 RP 3/8 (Nickerson). Flowers of good substance, openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, with 5 wavy lobes between strong reddish purple 2.5 RP 4/ 10 and deep reddish purple 2.5 RP 3/8, with vivid greenish yellow 7.5 Y 8/12 dorsal blotch. Calyx minute, strong greenish yellow. Truss 5" across x 6" high, ball-shaped, with 14 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4½" x 2" oblong, apiculate rounded, glabrous, moderate olive green 7.5 GY 4/4. Plant upright, branching well, 5' x 5' in 8 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least -5° F.

BARRY BITTINGER An Eden Hybrid evergreen azalea. Parentage unstated. Cross 1969), raised, and introduced by W. David Smith, Spring Grove, PA. Flowers of good substance, widely funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1¼" long, with 5+5 frilled lobes (hose-in-hose), white. Inflorescence 3-4½" across x 1¼" high, 2-3-flowered. Floriferous. Leaves held well through winter, 1¾" x ¾", elliptic, apiculate, cuneate, moderate yellow green 5 GY 5/6, hairy on both surfaces, Plant upright, branching well with stiff branches, 4' tall x 3' wide in 8 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -15° F.

BESS HALLOCK A Linwood Hardy Evergreen Azalea. Parents unknown. Cross 1965raised and introduced 1976) by Albert Reid Linwood NJ. Flowers of heavy substance widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1 " long, with 5 + 5 + 2-4 wavy lobes hose-in-hose, semi-double Spiraea Red o25/1 H. C. C. with very few darker spots. 0-5 stamens. Inflorescence 3" across x 2" high, 2-3-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 1¼" x ⅝", narrowly obovate, mucronate, cuneate, glossy, Parsley Green oo962. Plant broad, branching well with stiff branches, 1' tall x 2' wide in 5 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 0° F.

BLAZON A Greenwood Evergreen Azalea. ('Louise Gable' x 'Ward's Ruby') x 'James Gable'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by W. L. Guttormsen Canby, OR. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1" long, with 5 + 5 hose-in-hose evenly rounded lobes, Red Group 53B R. H. S. Colour Chart Cardinal Red). Inflorescence 2" across x 3" high, 2-9-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter, 1¾" x ⅞", elliptic, obtuse, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137C. Plant upright, branching moderately, 2' tall x 1½' wide in 8 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least 0° F.

CLIPPER A Greenwood Evergreen Azalea. 'Louise Gable' x 'Ward's Ruby'. Cross 1961 , raised, and introduced 1968 by W. L. Guttormsen, Canby. OR. Flowers widely funnel-shaped to openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 1¼" long, with 5-15 lobes (single, semi-double or double), Red Purple Group 68B to 68C to 68D R. H. S. Colour Chart Roseine to Rhodamine Purple), with ¼" reverse lobe edging 68B. 0-5 stamens. Calyx minute, green. Inflorescence 1-2-flowered. Leaves held well through winter, 1¾" x ⅞", elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Yellow Green Group 146A. Plant semi-dwarf, upright, branching moderately with years branches, 25" tall x 20" wide in 15 years. Blooms in late May. Hardy to at least 0° F.

COLOSSUS A superior, large flowered form of R. calendulaceum collected near Burning Town Gap, North Carolina, in 1952 and introduced 1953 by Dr. David G. Leach. Registered by Dr. Leach in 1972 without description. Described by Frank D Mossman, M.D. Buds more red than flowers. Flowers tubular funnel-shaped, 2⅜" across in field, when collected flowers were nearly 4 across but in cultivation, much smaller), with 5 frilled lobes Indian Orange 713/1-713 H. C. C. with red lines and dorsal lobe shaded Orpiment Orange 10/1, reverse with broad red stripe down center of each lobe, lower lobes convex. Calyx minute, green with white hairs. Stamens and pistil much exserted. Truss 4-5"across, flat, with 6-11 flowers. Leaves to 3" x 1", narrowly elliptic many terminal leaves are oblanceolate to narrowly obovate), apiculate, cuneate, slightly bullate, Fern Green o862/, with appressed hairs along under surface veins. Plant upright, branching well, 3' tall x 1½' wide in 10 years. Blooms in early June. Hardy to at least -20° F.

CRIMSON CREST A Greenwood Evergreen Azalea. 'Louise Gable' x 'Ward's Ruby') x 'James Gable'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced by W. L. Guttormsen, Canby, OR. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1 " long, with 5+5 hose-in-hose evenly rounded lobes, Red Group 53A R. H. S. Colour Chart (Cardinal Red). Inflorescence 2-3-flowered. Leaves held well through winter- 1¾" x 1", narrowly obovate, mucronate cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137C. Plant rounded, branching well, 16" tall x 14" wide in 8 years. Blooms mid to late April. Hardy to at least 0° F.

DEEP PURPLE A Green Evergreen Azalea. 'Violacea' x 'Purple Splendor'. Cross 1967 , raised, and introduced 1974 by W. L. Guttormsen, Canby, OR. Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2¾" across x 1¼" long, with 5+5 hose-in-hose evenly rounded to wavy lobes, Red Purple Group 72B R. H. S. Colour Chart with Purple Group 77A blotch. Inflorescence 1-2 flowered. Leaves held well through winter , 1¾" x 1 ¹ / 16 " oblanceolate apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137B. Plant rounded branching well, 1½' x 1½' in 5 Years. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least 5° F.

DONNA HARDGROVE R. fortunei (hardy selection) x R. wardii x R. dichroanthum . Cross (probably 1951 raised and named by Donald L. Hardgrove. Purchased 1964 and introduced 1966 by Sidney Burns, Syosset, NY. Described by Richard Murcott. Buds Red Group 43B R. H. S. Colour Chart) (Scarlet). Flowers widely funnel-campanulate, 2½" across x 2" long, with 6 wavy lobes, opening apricot pink, becoming Yellow Orange Group 23C Cadmium Orange) with 23B edging. Calyx ⅛", light green. Truss 6" across x 3" high, lax, with 8 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 1 year, 3½" x 1½", elliptic to lanceolate, obtuse, cuneate, glabrous.  Green Group 139B. Plant rounded, branching well, 2½' tall x 3' wide in 12 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -5° F.

FIRE SPRITE A Greenwood Evergreen Azalea. 'Louise Gable' x 'Ward's Ruby') x 'James Gable'. Cross (1968), raised, and introduced 1976 ) by W. L. Guttormsen, Canby, OR. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2¼" across x 1¼" long, with 5+5 (hosein-hose) evenly rounded lobes, Red Group 53C R. H. S. Colour Chart Cardinal Red). Inflorescence 4" across x 3" high, 3-16 flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held well through winter when bronze, 1¼" x ⅝", narrowly obovate, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137C. Plant rounded, branching well, 26" tall x 24" wide in 8 years. Blooms mid to late April. Hardy to at least 0° F.

FRAN LABERA 'Helen Everitt' x Dexter's Honeydew SAE 21 . Cross 1961, raised, and introduced 1977) by Henry and Selma Fuller, Easton, CT. Buds greenish white. Flowers of heavy substance, openly funnel-shaped to saucer-shaped, 3½-4" across x 2½" long 1½" in depth), with 7 wavy lobes, with very strong nutmeg fragrance, white to cream or slightly Yellow at times, throat chartreuse, with a few pea green veins extending into throat. Calyx minute, medium to light green. Truss 6" across x 5" high, ball-shaped, moderately lax, with 8-11 flowers. Very floriferous. Leaves held 2 years, 4½-5¼" x 1¾-2¼", narrowly obovate, apiculate, rounded to slightly oblique, glabrous, medium to dark green. Plant rounded, branching moderately, 6' tall x 7' wide in 15 years. Blooms mid-May or slightly later. Hardy to at least -17° F.

GENIE MAGIC A Greenwood Evergreen Azalea. 'Rose Greeley' x 'Ward's Ruby') x 'Kirin' Syn. Coral Bells). Cross (1967), raised, and introduced 1973 ) by W. L. Guttormsen, Canby, OR. Synonym: Genie. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x 1½" long, with 5+5 hose-in-hose evenly rounded lobes, Red Group 47C R. H. S. Colour Chart Delft Rose). Inflorescence 13-flowered. Floriferous. Leaves held well in winter, 1¼" x ⅝", elliptic to narrowly elliptic, acute, cuneate, glabrous, glossy, Green Group 137C. Plant semi-dwarf, rounded, branching well, 18" tall x 20" wide in 7 years. Blooms mid to late April. Hardy to at least 0° F.

GOLDEN STAR R. fortunei (hardy selection) x R. wardii Croceum Group. Cross (probably 1951), raised, and named by Donald L. Hardgrove. Purchased 1964 and introduced 1966 by Sidney Burns, Syosset, NY. Described by Richard Murcott. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 3" across x 2" long, with 7 wavy lobes, Yellow Group 8B R. H. S. Colour Chart (Mimosa Yellow). Calyx 1/8", light green. Truss 5" x 5", ball-shaped, with 7 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 Years, 5" x 2", elliptic, apiculate, rounded, glabrous, Green Group 139B. Plant broad, branching moderately, 5' tall x 4' wide in 9 Years. Hardy to at least 0° F.

ISLAND GEM R. oreotrephes (open pollinated). Seed from The Royal Horticultural Society, 1971, as R. timeteum . Raised and introduced by Howard A. Short, Bainbridge Island, WA. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 6 cm. across x 3½ cm. long, with 5 wavy lobes, Purple Group 76A R. H. S. Colour Chart), with very prominent Greyed Red Group 180B spotted blotch on 3 dorsal lobes and Greyed Orange Group 168D shading deep in throat. Calyx rim, light green, scaly. Terminal flower cluster 5-10 cm. across x 3-8 cm. high, ball-shaped, with 2-3 floral buds, each 3-4-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 Years, 5 cm. x 2½ cm., elliptic to slightly oblong, obtuse, rounded, glossy, glaucous, Green Group 137C, under surface with small, tan, closely to moderately spaced scales. Plant upright, branching moderately with stiff branches, 24" tall x 15" wide in 7 years. Blooms in mid-April. Hardy to at least 10° F.

JANE GEISELMAN An Eden Hybrid evergreen azalea. 'Helenm' (a Smith hybrid) x 'Marjorie' (Gable). Cross (1967), raised, and introduced by W. David Smith, Spring Grove, PA. Buds and corolla reverse deep purplish pink 7.5 RP 6/12 Nickerson. Flowers openly funnel-shaped, 2" across x ½" long, with 5+5 wavy lobes (hose-in-hose), strong Purplish pink 7.5 RP 7/10 with slight yellowish cast in dorsal throat. Inflorescence 4-5" across x 2½" high, 23-flowered. Free flowering. Leaves held 2-3 years, 2" x 1", oblong, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, moderate olive green 5 GY 4/3. Plant upright, broad, branching well with stiff branches, 6' x 6' in 8 years. Blooms in early May. Hardy to at least -15° F.

JANE HENNY 'Lady Bligh' x 'Loderi Venus'. Cross 1950 and raised by Rudolph Henny. Named and introduced 1972 by Leona Henny, Brooks, OR. Described by Ed Parker. Buds shaded Red Group 55B R. H. S. Colour Chart Neyron Rose). Flowers of heavy substance, long lasting, openly funnel-shaped, 4" across x 2" long, with 5 wavy, recurved, much overlapped lobes, fragrant, white with 56B shading and mottling, fading to White Group 155D, with Orange Red Group 35D rays in throat dorsal 2 rays are longest, ½-¾", and end with a few spots). 0-2 very small, short, aborted stamens. Calyx uneven, 1/16 - 1/8", greenish-Yellow with lobes tipped red. Truss 7" x 7", full, conical, with 13 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves held 3 years, 4¼-6" x 1¼-2" (very variable), boat-shaped, narrowly elliptic to slightly oblanceolate, acute cuneate, glabrous, dull, Yellow Green Group 146B. Plant upright, rounded, branching moderately somewhat open with stiff to slightly willowy branches, 6' tall x 4½-5' wide in 10 years. Blooms in late May, early June. Hardy to at least 9° F.

JEAN LEPPO R. catawbiense , R. maximum , and perhaps, unknown hybrids) F. First cross about 1950. Cross 1969 raised, and introduced by W. David Smith, Spring Grove, PA. Buds strong purplish red 7.5 RP 4/11 Nickerson . Flowers widely funnel-shaped, 2½" across x 2" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, moderate pink 10 RP 8/5 with very slight strong yellow 5 Y 7 / 10 blotch, reverse strong purplish pink 7.5 RP 7 / 10. Calyx minute, strong yellow. Truss 6" across x 4" high, dome-shaped, with 17 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves held 2 years, 4¼ x 1¾", narrowly oblong to oblong, apiculate, cuneate, glabrous, moderate olive green 5 GY 4/3, with slight tan indumentum. Plant upright, rounded, branching well with stiff branches, 4' x 4' in 7 years. Blooms in mid-May. Hardy to at least -15-20° F.

JULY JEWEL R. prunifolium 'S. D. Coleman' x R. cumberlandense 'Scarlet Salute'. Cross (1961), raised, and introduced by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers of heavy substance, tubular funnel-shaped, 1⅝" x 1⅝", with 5 evenly rounded lobes, Orange Red Group 33A R. H .S. Colour Chart) (Capsicum Red with fugitive 30A blotch. Calyx 1/8", green. Truss 3¼" across x 3¾" high, flat, with 5-7 flowers. Floriferous. Leaves 2⅜" x 1⅛", elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, acuminate, cuneate bullate dark green. Plant broad semi-dwarf , branching well, 20" tall x 36" wide in 16 years. Blooms in late July. Hardy to at least -20° F.

JULY JINGLE R. prunifolium 'S. D. Coleman' x R. arborescens Cross (1961), raised, and introduced by Dr. David G. Leach. Flowers of heavy substance, tubular funnel-shaped, 1⅝" across x 1½" long, with 5 evenly rounded lobes, very fragrant, Red Group 54D R. H. S. Colour Chart Spinel Red), suffused 52C Carmine Rose in centers of lobes and with faint dorsal pale orange blotch. Style dark red. Calyx 3/16", green. Truss 3¼" across x 1¾" high, flat, with 6-7 flowers. Free flowering. Leaves 2¾" x 1 ⁵
