JARS v48n3 - Bronze Medal Awards
Bronze Medal Awards
CASCADE CHAPTER
Joy Bailey
This 7th day of June 1994, the Bronze Medal is awarded as a token of the high esteem in which she is held. Joy has shown service to both the Chapter and to the American Rhododendron Society. Joy has done an outstanding job as our first secretary and chief promoter of good will within the Chapter. Joy has always been willing to take that extra measure to ensure a successful event, such as making and donating afghans for our annual flower show raffle, and to be there to volunteer whenever there was a need. Joy's long association with the American Rhododendron Society has been a great bonus to our Chapter as she has been able to provide the esprit de corps in the building our new Chapter.
COWICHAN VALLEY CHAPTER
Peter Kearns
In appreciation and recognition of the expertise, time, encouragement and plants which you have given to the Cowichan Valley Rhododendron Society. Peter was one of the founding members of our Chapter. He has served on many committees and on the Executive. He brings the plants for our meeting raffles, as well as gifts for the new members. His advice on growing rhododendrons and landscaping is sought after. He is a knowledgeable speaker and he has often written for our newsletter. His help at events is always given. Peter has opened his garden to our members to enjoy and to teach us about propagation methods. We are honoured to have presented you with the Bronze Medal Award. March 1994.
Etta and Greg Cook
In recognition and appreciation of Etta and Greg Cook, the Cowichan Valley Rhododendron Society would like to thank Etta and Greg Cook for their many contributions. Etta and Greg attended the first meeting of our society and pledged their support. Since then they have been kept extremely busy! Etta's organizational skills will long be remembered as we think about the wonderful parties and social events she planned. She has served on the Executive, helping to form decisions to make our society strong. Both Etta and Greg have helped at plant sales, during the event, and more importantly, setting up and cleaning up after the event. The garden which you have grown shows your love of the genus
Rhododendron
. Members and visitors are welcomed to your garden on tours, and you generously have given plants and cuttings. We are happy to have presented you the Bronze Medal Award. March 1994.
Joan and Victor Clarke
Joan and Victor Clarke have been a self appointed welcoming committee team to members joining the Cowichan Valley Rhododendron Society. Many of our members wear the beautiful name brooches made from rhododendron wood which the Clarkes have made, so that members are comfortable and at home with the group. The Clarkes are Charter Members. They have served on the Executive for several terms. Their organizational skills and task planning make them an asset in an organization such as ours. Vic has handled the plant sales for several years, increasing the assets of the group each time. Joan has planned many parties and social events, making them run smoothly and pleasurable to attend. In acknowledgment and gratitude we have presented you the Bronze Medal Award. April 1994.
EUGENE CHAPTER
Michael Robert
In recognition and appreciation for his dedicated service and leadership, the Eugene Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society is honored to present its highest award, the Bronze Medal, to Michael Robert. This award is presented in recognition of your unselfish service. With infectious enthusiasm and boundless energy you have served as President, Vice-president, Past President and Treasurer of the Chapter. These services have been performed with great care and thoughtfulness and with the best interests of the Chapter and its membership as your primary consideration. As a token of our gratitude we are proud to bestow this medal upon you. April 9, 1994.
Frances Burns
For her valuable contributions and dedicated service, the Eugene Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society presents its highest award, the Bronze Medal, to Frances Burns. You have provided a vital and dedicated service as Chapter newsletter editor. You have given generously of your time and energy to this endeavor making the newsletter interesting and informative, contributing greatly to the success of the Chapter. This medal is awarded in grateful appreciation. April 9, 1994.
GREATER PHILADELPHIA CHAPTER
Brian T. Keim
You have served your Chapter and the Society well and with distinction for many years. You have been member, director, secretary, vice president, president and, again, secretary. When circumstances required it you willingly offered to serve another term as president, this despite an extraordinarily demanding law practice. During these years you have provided for the ongoing handling of notices and announcements. Through your knowledge and understanding of the genus and an exceptionally fine collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and companion plants in your garden, you have aided and abetted the successful "plants for members" project, and have been helpful in both planning and actively assisting in the Chapter's annual cut-truss show and plant sale. For your willingness to accept a leadership role at crucial times, to share your broad knowledge of rhododendrons and azaleas, the members of the Greater Philadelphia Chapter, American Rhododendron Society, take pride in presenting the Bronze Medal of the Society to Brian T. Keim. April 16, 1994.
MAINE CHAPTER
Mark Slavish
The Maine Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society is pleased to present the Bronze Medal Award to Mark Stavish in recognition of his work as one of the founding members of the Chapter. Without his perseverance there would be no Maine Chapter. In 1987 he was scouting the area for members before he had even moved his nursery up from New Jersey. Subsequently, Mark was the moving force behind the young Chapter, planning programs, editing and publishing a newsletter, and serving as its first president. He was generous in donating plants for new member incentives and "door prizes" and at wholesale for our very successful fundraiser plant sales. Mark's extensive knowledge of rhododendrons and indeed of all plants, native and otherwise, has been willingly shared. A tour of his woodland display garden would convince any doubter of the viability of rhododendrons in Maine. For his enthusiasm and hard work the Chapter is most grateful.
Barbara Weinz
The Maine Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society is pleased to present the Bronze Medal Award to Barbara Weinz in recognition of her work as one of the founding members of the Chapter. Barbara has willingly shared her knowledge of the genus
Rhododendron
with all. Many of us are grateful recipients of her advice and even her seedlings. She served as second president to the young Chapter, bringing her enthusiasm and expertise to the job. She has worked tirelessly to insure that rhododendrons were present and accounted for at each Maine Horticultural Show at our education booth. In spite of a very busy schedule at her antique shop, she has found time to "engineer" many of the Chapter's programs. Her love of these plants shows in everything she does, and seems to be contagious. We truly appreciate her efforts.
TUALATIN VALLEY CHAPTER
Dallas Boge
A member since 1981, our honoree has served the Chapter in many capacities: Board Member, Show Chairman (more than once), liaison with the Rhododendron Species Foundation, and President (1985-87). A very active worker in the Chapter Garden at the Jenkins Estate, he also served as a Board Member of the Cecil & Molly Smith Garden. He is a regular participant and contributor with the Chapter Study Group. With Robert Ross, he has done research on our native
Rhododendron macrophyllum
under a grant from the Research Foundation, resulting in several articles for the
Rhody Runner
and the
Journal American Rhododendron Society
. This research also brought him an assignment as speaker at a Rhododendron Species Foundation Annual Meeting. The Tualatin Valley Chapter is proud to award the Bronze Medal of the American Rhododendron Society to Dallas Boge. May 14, 1994.
