American Rhododendron Society Plant Registry
The following rhododendron and azalea names, submitted through the North American registrar, were approved and added to the International Rhododendron Register prior to May 1,2000 by the Royal Horticultural Society, International Registration Authority for the genus Rhododendron . Names conform to the rules and recommendations of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants - 1995.
Color numbers refer to the RHS Colour Chart unless noted otherwise. Accompanying color names are taken from A Contribution toward Standardization of Color Names in Horticulture , R.D. Huse and K.L Kelly, edited by D.H. Voss (ARS, 1984).
Parents of a plant are reported in the conventional order: (seed parent x pollen parent). Abbreviations are used where appropriate: H = hybridized by, G = grown to first flower by, R = raised by, S = selected by, N = named by, I = introduced by, REG = registered by; dates are enclosed in parentheses immediately following the activity.
Metric conversions of flower and leaf measurements are reported in 5mm (0.2") increments for dimensions greater than 25mm (1").
'Cocheco Elf: Elepidote. {[( yakushimanum x haematodes ) x ( yakushimanum x unknown)] x 'Boule de Neige'}. H (1985), G, N, and REG (2000): Joe B. Parks, Dover, NH. Fls 12/dome truss, openly funnel-shaped, 2.75" (70mm) long x 2" (50mm) wide, 6 wavy-edged lobes; inside light purple (75A-B) shading paler towards center, with a dorsal blotch composed of spots paler than moderate yellow green (146D); outside very pale purple (75D). Truss 3" (75mm) high x 4" (100mm) wide. Lvs 3.9" (100mm) x 1.6" (40mm), held 3 years, obovate, cuneate base, obtuse apex, wavy margins; dull, dark to deep yellowish green (139A-141A) above, hairless. Shrub 1' (0.3m) tall x 2.8' (0.9m) wide in 16 years; dense habit. Plant hardy to at least -23°F (-31°C); buds, -19°F (-28°C). Late May.
'Cocheco Raspberry Swirl': Elepidote. ('Boule de Neige' x 'Henry's Red'). H (1985), G, N, and REG (2000): Joe B. Parks, Dover, NH. Fls 14-15/conical truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 1.5" (38mm) long x 1.6" (40mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; inside strong purplish red (71B-C), with five pale yellow green (155A) flares extending upwards c 13mm from base of each lobe, and with dark red (59A) dorsal spotting; outside strong purplish red (71D). Truss 4" (100mm) high x 4" (100mm) wide. Lvs 4.9" (125mm) x 1.8" (45mm), held 2 years, elliptic, cuneate base, broadly acute apex, flat margins; dull, moderate yellow green (137C) to moderate yellowish green (137D) above, hairless. Shrub 3.7' (1.1m) tall x 3.2' (1.0m) wide in 9 years; intermediate habit. Plant hardy to at least -23°F (-31°C); buds, -18°F (-28°C). Early June.
'Cocheco Sweet Perfume': Elepidote. ('Amethyst Ice' x unidentified Dexter hybrid). H (1985), G, N, and REG (2000): Joe B. Parks, Dover, NH. Fls 10-12/flat truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 1.75" (45mm) long x 2.3" (60mm) wide, of heavy texture, 7 wavy-edged lobes; moderate purplish pink (70D) in bud, opening very pale purple (almost white), the inside (69D), the outside (69C); no prominent markings; strongly scented with a light clove aroma. Truss 4" (100mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 5.5" (140mm) x 2.25" (55mm), held 2 years, elliptic, cuneate base, broadly acute apex, upcurved margins; dull, moderate olive green (137B) above, hairless. Shrub 4.5' (1.4m) tall x 3.5' (1.1m) wide in 14 years; intermediate habit. Plant hardy to at least -20°F (-29°C); buds, -15°F (-26°C). Late May.
'Fragrant Star': Deciduous azalea. ('Snowbird', treated with colchicine to produce a polyploid). H (1994), G (1998), N (2000), and I (2000): Briggs Nursery; REG (2000): Lynne Caton, Briggs Nursery, Olympia, WA. Fls 7-9/dome truss, tubular funnel-shaped, 1.5" (40mm) long x 1.5" (40mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; pale yellow (158A) in bud, opening inside pale yellow (158B), outside yellowish white (158C); unmarked, strongly scented. Truss 2.5" (65mm) high x 4" (100mm) wide. Lvs 2" (50mm) x 1.25" (30mm), obovate, cuneate base, obtuse apex, down curved margins; dull, moderate yellow green (146B) above, hairless. Shrub 1.2' (0.35m) tall x 1.2' (0.35m) wide in 3 years; intermediate habit. Mid May.
'Francisca Darts': Elepidote. ('Mrs. Lammot Copeland' x hemsleyanum ). H (pre 1985), N, and REG (2000): A.R. Cook, North Vancouver, B.C.; G: F. Darts, Surrey, B.C.. Fls 11/flat truss, funnel-shaped, 4" (100mm) long x 4.5" (115mm) wide, 7 frilly-edged lobes; orange in bud, opening yellow throughout. Lvs held 3 years, 8.5" (215mm) x 3.5" (90mm), oblong, wavy-edged margins, auriculate base, obtuse apex, dull green above, hairless. Shrub 10' (3.0m) tall x 10' (3.0m) wide in c 15 years; open habit. Plant hardy to at least 0°F (-18°C). Late June-early July.
'Gene's Valentine': Elepidote. ('Cornubia' x haematodes ssp. chaetomallum ). H (1970): C. Phetteplace, Leaburg, OR; G and N (1975): Eugene Cockeram; I: Rhododendrons Plus, Florence, OR; REG (2000): Everett Hall and E. Cockeram, Florence, OR. Fls 8-11/lax truss, funnel-campanulate, 2" (50mm) long x 2.5" (65mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; buds strong red (46A) at base, shading to dark red (187B) at apex, opening strong red (46A) throughout, with scattered, deep purplish red (59B) spots on three dorsal lobes. Calyx 20mm long, strong red (53B). Truss 3" (75mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs held 1 (-2) years, 5.25" (130mm) x 2.25" (55mm), elliptic, rounded base, broadly acute apex, slightly down curved margins, semi-glossy, moderate olive green (147A) above, hairless. Shrub 8' (2.4m) tall x 9' (2.7m) wide in 30 years; dense, rounded habit. Plant hardy to at least 5°F (-15°C); buds, 20°F (-7°C). Mid February-March. (Synonym: 'My Valentine')
'Journey': Elepidote. ('Mindy's Love' x 'Mesquite'). H (1990), G (1994), N (1999), and REG (2000): Jim Barlup, Bellevue, WA. Fls 18/ball truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; pale yellow (20C) in bud, opening inside and out pale yellow green (4D) at margins and deepening to light greenish yellow (6D) in throat; the inside with a deep red (185A) basal blotch and two spotted dorsal flares extending upwards c 1.2" (30mm). Truss 5.5" (140mm) high x 5.5" (140mm) wide. Lvs 4.1" (105mm) x 2.1" (55mm), held 2 years, elliptic, flat, rounded base, broadly acute apex; semi-glossy, moderate olive green (147A) above, hairless. Shrub 2.5' (0.75m) tall x 4' (1.2m) wide in 9 years; intermediate habit. Plant hardy to at least 6°F (-14°C). Early May.

'Karen Morebeck': Vireya. (R. leucogigas 'Hunstein's Secret' (s) X R. konori 'White Giant'. H: J.L. Rouse, Victoria, Australia; G and S: Karen Morebeck, San Francisco, CA; N (1999) and REG (2000): Strybing Arboretum, San Francisco, CA. Fls 8/flat truss, tubular funnel-shaped, 6" (150mm) long x 5.5" (140mm) wide, 6-8 wavy-edged lobes; reddish purple in bud, opening inside greenish white (155C), shaded pale purplish pink (62D) in throat; outside lobes white, tube darker pink; strongly scented. Calyx 50-75mm long, dark pink. Truss 5" (125mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 8" (200mm) x 4" (100mm), oblong, broadly acute apex, oblique base, down curved margins; dull, mid green above. Shrub 5' (1.5m) tall x 4' (1.2m) wide in 5 years; open habit. Plant and bud hardy to 32deg;F (0deg;C). Flowering time various. 'McKenzie': Lepidote. (selection from mucronulatum). Obtained as seedling from J. Caperci (1974); G (1978), N (2000), and REG (2000): August E. Kehr, Hendersonville, NC; to be I: Briggs Nursery (c 2004), Olympia, WA. Fls 3/flat truss, broadly funnel-shaped, c 1.5" (40mm) long x 2" (50mm) wide, 5 flat-edged lobes; pinkish salmon in bud, opening inside pale purplish pink (56C), with greenish yellow spotting at base, changing to deep rose closer to margin; outside darker purplish pink. Calyx rim-like, green. Truss 1.75" (45mm) high x 2.75" (70mm) wide. Lvs semi-persistent in mild winters, elliptic, 1.9" (50mm) x 0.75" (20mm), cuneate base, acuminate apex, flat margins, semi-glossy, deep green above. Shrub 8' (2.4m) tall x 2.5' (0.75m) wide in 22 years; intermediate habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least -10F (-23C) Early.
'Mesquite': Elepidote. ('Hill's Low Red' x 'Marie Starks'). H (1985), G (1990), N (1996), and REG (2000): Jim Barlup, Bellevue, WA. Fls 15/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; strong red (47B) in bud, opening pale yellow (8D) throughout, the dorsal lobe flushed light greenish yellow (8C) and lightly spotted brownish orange (172C); nectar pouches are strong red (53B). Truss 5" (125mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 4.75" (120mm) x 1.9" (45mm), held 2 years, elliptic, flat, rounded base, broadly acute apex; glossy, moderate olive green (147A) above, hairless. Shrub 2' (0.6m) tall x 4' (1.2m) wide in 14 years; dense habit. Plant hardy to at least 0F (-18C). Early May.
'Mr Dee': Elepidote. ('Marinus Koster' x probably 'Marinus Koster'). H, G, and N (early 1960s): Pauline Newberry; I (1973): Trillium Lane Nursery; REG (2000): Eleanor Philp; all Fort Bragg, CA. Fls 16/dome truss, broadly funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 3.5" (90mm) wide, 5 wavy-edged lobes; vivid purplish red (57B) in bud, opening inside yellowish white(155D), with a narrow border of deep purplish pink (67C) and discrete dorsal spotting of moderate purplish red (59C); outside yellowish white (155D) shading to vivid purplish red (67D). Calyx 0.4" (10mm) long, light yellow green (145C) to strong purplish red (58C). Truss 3.5" (90mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 5.25" (130mm) x 2.5" (65mm), elliptic, rounded base, acuminate apex, upcurved margins; dull, moderate olive green (137A) above, hairless. Shrub 7' (2.1m) tall x 8' (2.4m) wide in 15 years; intermediate habit. Plant hardy to at least 17F (-8C); buds, 28F (-2C). Midseason.
'My Valentine': Synonym of 'Gene's Valentine'.
'Noyo Snow': Elepidote. (yakushimanum x arboreum). H: William Moyles, Oakland, CA; G and I: Charles Richards; N and REG (2000): Eleanor Philp; both Fort Bragg, CA. Fls 10-17/ball truss, broadly funnel-campanulate, 2.25" (55mm) long x 3" (75mm) wide, usually 7 wavy-edged lobes; buds shading from strong purplish pink (55B) at apex to pale purplish pink (56C) at base, opening inside pale purplish pink (65D) at edge and fading to yellowish white (155D) at center, with a light yellow green (150D) dorsal blotch; outside yellowish white (155D) when fully mature. Calyx 0.1"-0.25" (3-6mm) long, pale yellow green (149D). Truss 6" (150mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 4" (100mm) x 1.4" (35mm), held 2 years, oblong, rounded base, broadly acute apex, down curved margins; dull, moderate olive green (147A) above, with sparse, yellowish white (196D) hairs above and below when young, hairs aging to pale yellow (161C) and appearing below only at maturity. Shrub 2' (0.6m) tall x 2.25' (0.7m) wide in 7 years; dense habit. Plant and bud hardy to at least 17F (-8C). Midseason.
'Pride of PoCo': Deciduous azalea, (an Exbury azalea hybrid x a Knap Hill azalea hybrid). H (pre 1985) and G: S.E. Sorenson, Homestead Nurseries, Clayburn, B.C.; N (1999): City of Port Coquitlam, B.C.; REG (2000): Bill Herbst, Port Coquitlam, B.C., Canada. Fls semi-double, 10-12/dome truss, tubular funnel-shaped, 2" (50mm) long x 2" (50mm) wide, with 5 wavy-edged lobes and 1-4 petaloid stamens; orange to darkish salmon, with a bluish throat; lightly scented. Truss 4" (100mm) high x 6" (150mm) wide. Lvs 2.5" (65mm) x 2" (50mm), elliptic, hairless. Shrub 5' (1.5m) tall x 4' (1.2m) wide in 15 years; open habit. Mid May. (Synonym: 'Sorenson 168')
