Virginia Tech top patent receiver
Virginia Tech ranked among the top 14 universities in the nation in 1992 in the number of patents issued. Discoveries by faculty, staff, and students earned 23 patents last year, compared to 11 in 1991. Discoveries range from fire-resistant polymers to custom-fitting earplugs.
Big business
The Pamplin College of Business graduates the sixth-highest number of doctoral business students in the nation. A combined undergraduate and graduate enrollment of about 4,000 students makes the business college the largest in the commonwealth.
MBA students win Governor's Award--again
Virginia Tech MBA students have won another Governor's Award from Virginia's Department of Economic Development for their work in helping Virginia companies develop export markets. Ten colleges and universities and more than 20 companies across the state are active in the program. This year's winning project was done for Valcom, a Roanoke company that manufactures and sells public address sound systems.
Engineering teams take aerospace prizes
The Virginia Tech College of Engineering walked away with four of the six awards in the 1992 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) design competition. In both the space design and the aircraft design competitions, Virginia Tech's student teams placed first and third, repeating the winning performance of last year's space design team.
Play performed at Kennedy Center
A Virginia Tech theatre production was selected to compete in the National College Theatre Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The play, Fences, is the university's third production to be chosen for production at the Kennedy Center since the school began participating in the competition. Virginia Tech vied for a spot in the American College Theatre Festival Regionals against 80 other productions from the Southeast. The play was one of six chosen to be performed in Washington in April.
