Subject: Scholars Press to Publish Electric Mystic's Guide
SCHOLARS PRESS TO PUBLISH THE ELECTRIC MYSTIC'S GUIDE
In mid 1993 Scholars Press will publish the first
edition of _The Electric Mystic's Guide to the
Internet: A Directory of Electronic Documents, Online
Conferences, Serials, Software, and Archives Relevant
to Religious Studies_, by Michael Strangelove
(University of Ottawa, Religious Studies Department).
This represents the first time that a network-
accessible Postscript document will be used as the
master text for the production of a hardcopy version.
The publication of _The Electric Mystic's Guide_ will
expand the present models of concurrent print and
electronic publication in the following ways:
(1) The guide will be printed in three-ring binder
format to allow users to add supplements. Supplements
will be provided via the Net in Postscript and low
ASCII text on LISTSERV and FTP file servers. Scholars
Press will publish annual revised editions.
(2) The author will maintain full copyright over the
work.
(3) The full text of _The Electric Mystic's Guide_ will
continue to be fully and freely available on FTP and
Listserv as a WordPerfect, Postscript, and low ASCII
files. These network-accessible texts will be updated
regularly.
(4) The full text of the guide will be mounted on a
gopher server, which will allow Net users to read the
guide from a remote site while online, without having
to retrieve the document. Not only will the gopher
server allow for full text, online browsing of the
guide, but it will enable users to actually read many
of the network-accessible files indexed by the guide.
For example, users will be able to read an index of
electronic reviews and also read the actual reviews,
all through the gopher server.
(5) The guide will be maintained as three separate
volumes. This is done to accommodate the large size of
Postscript texts.
Scholars Press' proactive support of this project will
enable the creation of a central index to network-
accessible resources in religious studies. The creation
of such an index represents a necessary step in the
further development of the Net as a research and
pedagogical tool. Scholars Press is a consortium of
over two dozen university presses.
Volumes One and Three of the guide may be accessed via
Listserv at LISTSERV@UOTTAWA or
LISTSERV@ACADVM1.UOTTAWA.CA as MYSTICS V1-TXT
and MYSTICS V3-TXT
The guide may be accessed via FTP at the node
PANDA1.UOTTAWA.CA in the directory /pub/religion/ as a
variety of files.
The gopher server should be operational by 1993. The
hardcopy version will be available in mid 1993. Further
details will be announced throughout the Net as the
project develops.

Subject: Overseas email books orders ?
I often need to buy books in USA about Computer Science and
Human Computer Interaction.
In my city there are some bookstores that do this service but the
cost normally doubles and the time of supply is not acceptable.
I would like to ask everybody if you know good bookstores that can
accept overseas orders (by email, too ?) and have fast service
togheter to many computer titles and editors available
(i.e. Microsoft Press, Addison Wesley ...).
Should I be useful here in Italy for anyone, don't hesitate to contact me.

Here are two that I know of:
1. Quantum Books in Cambridge, MA -- an excellent technical bookstore
whose email address is quanbook@world.std.com. I've always had good
service with them -- haven't used email ordering, though, as I live nearby
and it is always a fun trip over there -- always buy more than I intend.
2. techbooks in Beaverton, Oregon: techbook.com is their domain name.
I have not dealt with them, so I do not know who one addresses orders to.
Hope this helps.

VPIEJ-L Resources
Listserv Archive:
There is a listserv archive available at listserv@vtvm1.cc.vt.edu
(listserv@vtvm1 for BITNET) for VPIEJ-L. Send a command as the body of a mail
message to get a current filelist: INDEX VPIEJ-L to listserv. Use the get
command to retrieve items from the archive in a mail message: GET EJ-BIB TXT.
FTP Archive:
The Scholarly Communications Project of Virginia Tech has an anonymous FTP
archive which includes the VPIEJ-L archive, along with many electronic texts
and electronic publishing utilities. To access this site, ftp to
BORG.LIB.VT.EDU and login as userid anonymous. This FTP archive is available
to the gopher literate through the gopher at gopher.micro.umn.edu. Select item
5, Internet file server (ftp) sites/, then item 2, Popular FTP Sites via
Gopher/. We also maintain a very experimental gopher that just points to the
FTP archive, borg.lib.vt.edu (port 70). Please do NOT add this to your own
site if you are a system's administrator. We are planning to experiment with
page image delivery with this system and may expand it to a general purpose
gopher in the future.
WAIS Source:
The discussion logs for the VPIEJ-L list are searchable via WAIS. The wais
source may be retrieved from the directory-of-servers by searching for VPIEJ-L,
or by FTP to borg.lib.vt.edu in the pub/WAIS/sources directory.
Usenet Gateway:
Subscribers may want to consider reading VPIEJ-L on Usenet. Check with your
system administrator to see if your site receives bit.listserv.vpiej-l. If it
does, you can unsubscribe your email account by sending a SIGNOFF VPIEJ-L
command to listserv@vtvm1.cc.vt.edu. You will still be able to post to the
list by email to vpiej-l@vtvm1.cc.vt.edu. If your site does not carry this
group, please encourage them to add it.

VPIEJ-L is a discussion list for electronic publishing issues, especially
those related to Scholarly Electronic Journals. Topics for discussion include
SGML, PostScript, and other e-journal formats; as well as software and hardware
considerations for creation of, storage, and access to e-journals. Publishers,
editors, technical staff, programmers, librarians, and end-users are welcome
to join. One goal of the list is to provide better feedback from users to
creators, so we are very interested in receiving and archival issues. This
should give those of us involved in publishing an idea as to what distribution
methods work and how end-users are accessing and using these publications.
Current readers of and contributors to VPIEJ-L have discussed readability
and screen display, copyright, and advertising (noncommercial).
Archives of VPIEJ-L are available. A listing may be retrieved by sending a
command INDEX VPIEJ-L to LISTSERV@VTVM1.
To subscribe, send the following command to LISTSERV@VTVM1 via mail or

Subject: E-Preprint/Paraprint Initiative
ELECTRONIC PRE-PRINT and PARA-PRINT DATABASES:
an invitation to collaboration
Following a working group meeting earlier this year, a small
committee of researchers, librarians, and scholarly society
publishers has been laying groundwork to create a standard
interface and a common searching engine for independent databases
of scholarly and scientific `preprints'. These might comprise any
form of academic discourse not yet ready for `publication'. We
have labelled another category of publications 'paraprints,' works
which may exist in network databases alongside formally printed
counterparts.
There are already individual databases of either citations or
aritlces, in numerous fields, chiefly sciences, and in the
humanities many listserv discussion groups have collections of
scholarly papers available for list members on the listserver. The
purpose of the preprints initiative is to rationalize such forms of
distribution and make the material they contain as widely and
easily available as possible. Several specific initiatives are on
the point of coming on-line in the next weeks and months.
The preprint group is now broadening its initiative. FIRST, we are
inviting other parties with a serious interest -- i.e., those who
would be interested in actively participating in creating and
maintaining such databases as part of a loose consortium -- to join
the ongoing discussion as we formulate standards and discuss
practical issues of management and finance.
Appropriate participants in the expanded working group might
include (but would not be limited to)
-- representatives from learned societies
-- individuals from research libraries
-- university presses publishing journals
-- listowners maintaining adjunct files of scholarly articles
-- specialists in disciplines or subdisciplines with an interest in
and a commitment to enhancing the flow of information and
discussion.
Business of the group is conducted on a closed listserv list. To
express interest in joining the electronic working group, contact
Listowner: James J. O'Donnell, University of Pennsylvania, Classics
Department jodonnel@mail.sas.upenn.edu
SECOND, we are beginning a Preprints/Paraprints database
clearinghouse and invite your submissions and listings of such
enterprises. They will be maintained in a central file updated as
new information arrives. The descriptions will be detailed as to
type of files and access.

TWU Woman's Collection
Perhaps it's not surprising that Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas,
has a "woman's" collection in the library, but the fact that this collection
is among the finest in the nation may be a surprise to many. Begun in 1932 at
the behest of one of the university's presidents, biographies of significant
women were collected to serve as role models for the students at Texas State
College for Women, later to be called Texas Woman's University.
Today, the Woman's Collection, housed at the Mary Evelyn Blagg-Huey Library on
the TWU campus, contains more than 42,000 books and periodicals, 2500 feet of
manuscript and archival records, and approximately 20,000 photographs. In
addition, the library acquires many of the large microfilm editions of
manuscripts and printed collections published by other libraries and boasts a
woman's clothing and textile collection.
The historical manuscripts include the personal papers of Hermine Tobolowsky,
the "Mother of the Texas Equal Legal Rights Amendment," Sarah Weddington (Roe
v. Wade), and authors Claire Myers Owens, LaVerne Harrel Clark, and Edith
Deen. In addition, the library has collected the records of significant
women's organizations such as the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, The Texas
Federation of Business and Professional Women, the American Association of
University Women (Texas), and the Texas state archives of Delta Kappa Gamma.
In addition, to add to its growing collection on women in the military, TWU
acquired the records of the WASP, Inc., the veterans organization for the
Women's Airforce Service Pilots who flew during World War II.
The Cookbook and Menu Collection has become one of the major collections in the
world since the acquisition of the Julie Benell Cookbook Collection and the
greater portion of the Cookery and Gastronomy Library of Mrs. Thomas M. Scruggs
and Margaret Cook. The entire collection numbers approximately 12,000
volumes.
TWU, the largest university primarly for women in the U.S, has approximately
10,000 students and is located 35 miles north of the Dallas-Fort Worth
metroplex. The Library houses more than three-quarters of a million items.

This report discusses technology's impact on the products,
revenue sources, and distribution channels of the publishing
industry over the next decade. It examines the threats and
opportunities facing the book publishing industry, and presents a
strategy for publishers to meet the threats and to use the
opportunities to decrease risk and increase profit. The strategy
also benefits education, science, and technology by making books

Subject: List for Net Document Authoring
I am often faced with editing questions when writing documentation
or articles about the Net and am uncertain where best to turn for
a Listserv forum. I wonder if others feel the need for a semi-private
(to keep volume reasonable) list for editors/authors of net stuff?
For example, what is the proper rendering of "listserv"? I have seen
listserv (small case in bold), LISTSERV and Listserv. Recently had a telephone
conversation with an editor as we tried to figure out the proper spelling
of freenet for a forthcoming piece. Turns out its Free-Net...
I hate to throw a series of such questions up on HELP-NET (too many answers,
often contradictory) and would prefer to speak to those in the "business".
Any thoughts on this?

I agree. I would be willing to setup such a list here if someone would
play Owner and moderator. I think it should be a moderated or perhaps
even a closed list. It would be a good start at developing a style guide.

I could use this kind of help. I'm not sure another list is
the best place for it or whether we should try to use VPIEJ-L.
I just sent off a guide to the literature of virtual reality to
the publisher, and am still not sure about the capitalization
of many network resources, such as the WELL (or Well) and
USENET or Usenet. Also when to use for net
addresses. Come to think of it, I don't know if "angle bracket"
is the right name for those marks.

Judging by the number of reponses I have received seems that my experience
of a need for conventions is shared. I hate the thought of yet one more list
so will suggest that we find a list that will accept discussion of writing
conventions regarding net words (the volume will not be too heavy, I suspect).
I will maintain a working document for the group and make it available
on ftp and listserv. Others have suggested that we aim to create an
informal style sheet that will address some of the typographical
issues and help standardize spelling of such animals as Free-Net and LisTSERv.
If the list owner(s) of VPIEJ-L is agreeable to the use of VPIEJ-L for such
discussion, I would suggest that, as a courtesy to the rest of the list,
we use the subject prefex CONVEN: in all convention postings, so those
not interested can quickly delete.
Once, and if, we get agreement from the list owner, I would like to discuss
the matter of listserv, LISTSERV, Listserv... under the subject heading:
CONVEN: Listserv
If we do not find an agreeable list, I can create one, but would rather not
do so.

This reminds of an idea I had a while back to start a Discussion
Group within ALA for newsletter editors. The problem was where
to place the group and I was starting to lose interest in working
the hallways of ALA. I was wondering whether you'd consider
making the proposed list a little broader to include editors
electronic ones. I mean, if the problem you are
having is spelling, a print editor would be just as helpful.
I'm not directly interested myself - I just finished a 3-year
stint as editor of a newsletter - but I would guess that other
editors would jump at the chance to have someone to talk to.

The list CCNEWS@BITNIC often has these discussions of style and usage.
Perhaps we should use it. My major problem with it is that it is a
moderated list and comes out on a regular but unpredictable basis. I
would prefer at minimum a daily moderated list and at best an open but
controlled (by the participants) discussion.

I'm not sure what Michael S meant when he started this thread. There is a
listserv for listserv owners--pretty inactive--is that it?
A listserv is a name of an address-space on a computer. In some respects
it's rather like an ExLibris or a VPIEJ-L or a graham (as in graham@zodiac).

* What is LISTSERV? What is Revised LISTSERV? *
***********************************************
LISTSERV stands for "list server"... but what does that mean? Origi-
nally, LISTSERV was a mailing-list server which was designed to make
group communication easier. The first version of LISTSERV, written by
EDUCOM and installed at BITNIC under the userid of LISTSERV, offered
basic "mail-exploding" capabilities. People with a common interest (eg
network protocols, issues related to handicapped people in education,
system administration problems) were grouped in a list which was then
stored on LISTSERV. They could then communicate with each other by sen-
ding mail to a special network address (eg UG-L@BITNIC). Any piece of
mail sent to these special user-ids would then be automatically distri-
buted by the list server to each and every person on the list. You did
not have to know all the names and network addresses of the people sub-
scribed to the list. The usual messages sent by the mailing systems
when mail has been successfully delivered were sent to LISTSERV -- a
big relief for the sender... People could join a list by asking the
"list coordinator" (actually the person who maintains the list server)
to be added to the list and it was a very convenient way to meet people
and participate in interesting discussions/forums.
As LISTSERV became popular and the number of lists grew, it started
to show some weaknesses and limitations. Even though LISTSERV was ins-
talled at a central site, it generated a very important traffic because
there was an important number of people from distant nodes in the net-
work. If there were ten persons of the same node on a given list, it
sent ten copies of each piece of mail to the node. List maintenance be-
came a problem because of the evergrowing number of requests for sub-
scription. Mail headers became bigger and bigger, and 30 lines was not
an uncommon size. Some non-VM users had troubles accessing the server,
could not send commands nor mail to it and received files in a format
their system was not able to read. Non-mail files could not be sent to
a list. The server was often caught looping on a rejection mail from a
network mailer. No help or command description was available, and
unknown commands were ignored. Sending a "HELP" command did not
produce any kind of answer from the server.
Revised LISTSERV is a brand new list processor which was developped
at the Ecole Centrale de Paris in France to overcome the restrictions
and lack of functionnality of the first version of LISTSERV. It retains
the basics of the old LISTSERV and provides good ascending compatibili-
ty, while offering more sophisticated functions, helpfiles and more
user-friendliness. Revised LISTSERVs can be linked together to create
peer lists for better network efficiency in a way that is nearly trans-
parent for the user. Users can send a command to the server to subscri-
be to a list. For more information about the differences between the
BITNIC-type LISTSERV and Revised LISTSERV, send the following command
to the nearest Revised LISTSERV: Info FEATures (or just: I FEAT)
! Additionally, Revised LISTSERV provides powerful file-server func-
! tions which allow list moderators to make pertinent datafiles and/or
! programs available to the subscribers of their lists. For more informa-
! tion on this new feature, issue the following command to the nearest
! Revised LISTSERV: Info FILE

I would be interested in joining a list of network editors (i.e., people
who exercise some editorial control over their lists), but only if the
topics as well as the traffic are restricted to the central interests of
of the group. Too many of the lists I join drift off into totally unre-
lated areas, and I have to unsub. If someone will organize a reasonably
disciplined list, I'd be happy to try t for a while.
