College of Arts and Sciences. Assistant to the Dean. The College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Office seeks an individual to work directly with the dean to enhance his efficiency and effectiveness in matters of personnel, program review, training, and information dissemination. The individual must be self-sufficient in an office environment as the position is without a staff. The position reports directly to the dean. Justification for the position is service to the faculty and staff, directors and department heads, and the dean. Applicants should be seeking an opportunity for service to others. Duties, tasks, and responsibilities include: coordinate people, materials, and information to prepare dean for meetings and decisions and for ad hoc (often urgent) requests and concerns; draft reports, letters, and other correspondence for the dean and review reports drafted by the dean's staff; coordinate committee appointments by anticipating vacancies and needs and by assembling lists of nominees; plan and coordinate annual agenda of heads' meetings; coordinate college promotion-and-tenure process with those of departments and the university; conceptualize, organize, and coordinate training and orientation programs for new directors, chairs, heads, and lead support staff; coordinate college involvement in faculty hiring including compliance with search procedures; liaise between the dean and programs and between dean and external reviewers to facilitate academic and departmental reviews; revise and update documents, college procedures, and policies; and foster a team attitude in the Dean's Office and work closely with Dean's Office personnel to maintain a service orientation. Significant administrative experience in an institution of higher education required. Classroom instructional experience desirable. Master's degree required with bachelor's degree in an arts and sciences discipline. Experience in positions demanding professional interactions with many people expected. Ability and willingness to adjust in a quickly changing environment a must. College of Engineering. Associate Dean for Administration. This position is administrative faculty, non-tenure-track. As the college's fiscal officer, the associate dean supervises the business manager and oversees the following administrative functions: budgeting and financial planning; allocation and renovation of space; and human resources. Major emphasis is placed on building the annual college budget, allocating resources to academic departments and the Dean's Office, and continually monitoring spending by the various units. The associate dean represents the college on several fiscally related university committees and works closely with the dean in providing guidance and support for the following college activities: promotion/tenure deliberations; faculty salary increases; performance evaluations for classified personnel; evaluations of departmental performance; agendas/minutes for the weekly staff and department heads meetings; Commencement exercise; participation in periodic national space surveys; and special projects as requested by the dean. While reporting directly to the dean, the associate dean for administration also has frequent interaction with the associate dean for research and graduate studies in providing reports and other data related to the college's large sponsored-research effort ($40 million/year in expenditures). Required qualifications: Significant managerial/financial experience, preferably in an academic environment. Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, management or other business-related field. An engineering degree, while not essential, would be beneficial. MBA or equivalent preferred. Strong financial and organizational abilities (attention to detail is critical) and proficiency in the use of computer-based financial applications software. Previous exposure to facilities management and operations preferred. Must be an energetic, responsive, and team-oriented individual, with exceptional interpersonal, relationship-building, and communications skills. Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent position (FA577), Culpeper County. Family and Human Development: For families with children, aging members, and special-needs families such as those dealing with welfare and court system to achieve improved levels of self-sufficiency, and to provide education for providers of child care, enhancing child care in the community, and the ability of child care providers to earn income. Responsibilities: Agents must determine program needs by monitoring trends and issues, involving Extension leadership councils and advisory committees; design programs to meet needs of target audience, specify program goals and objectives, identify resources; inform clientele of program activities; use appropriate technologies to plan and deliver programs through workshops, seminars, conferences, one-on-one visits, on-farm demonstrations, field trips and tours; maintain knowledge of current research information; develop computer applications; develop and implement evaluation plan; recruit and utilize volunteers; and report results to clientele, public, and decision-makers. Qualifications: Master's degree required or imminent in related discipline. Current Virginia Cooperative Extension faculty members with bachelor's degree may be considered based on specialty, expertise, and performance. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing; experience in relating with people. Experience in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating education programs in appropriate discipline. Ability to recruit, train, and manage volunteers.
