The Pamplin College of Business has appointed Kent Nakamato to the R.B. Pamplin Professorship in Marketing.
Nakamoto, who earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1985, was formerly director of research at the University of Colorado's business school, where he had been a faculty member since 1992. He had previously taught at the business schools of the University of Arizona and the University of California at Los Angeles.
Nakamoto's research focuses on the implications of consumer behavior for marketing strategy, particularly the development of long-term competitive advantage. He has taught courses on strategic marketing, marketing research, advertising management, and research methods.
Among the awards he has received for his research is the 1996 Journal of Consumer Research Best Article Award. He received the William F. O'Dell Award for his article in the 1989 Journal of Marketing Research that was cited for its "significant long-run contribution to the marketing discipline." At the University of Colorado, Nakamoto received the business school's Graduate Professor of the Year Award.
He served as co-host of the 1996 American Marketing Association's doctoral consortium and is a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of Consumer Psychology . He also served on the editorial review board of Psychology and Marketing .
The endowed professorship is among several professorships created to recruit or retain outstanding business faculty members with funds from an endowment established through gifts from R.B. Pamplin Sr. and R.B. Pamplin Jr. Gifts and commitments from the Pamplins to Virginia Tech now total more than $28 million.
