The Programs in Humanities in the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS) at Virginia Tech has announced the results of the recent summer-stipend competition.
The Humanities Summer Stipend Committee has selected six proposals for faculty research to be supported by the College of Arts and Sciences in the summer of 1998. Each stipend winner will receive $2,750, which may be used for travel and other research expenses or as summer salary.
The proposals selected are those of Mark V. Barrow, assistant professor of history, "Discovering Extinction: From the Decline of the Bison to the Endangered Species Act"; Beverly A. Bunch-Lyons, assistant professor of history, "And They Came: The Migration of African American Women from the South to Cincinnati, Ohio, 1900-1950"; John Christman, associate professor of philosophy, "Embedded Selves: The Value of Autonomy for Socially Defined Citizens"; Lawrence S. Grossman, associate professor of geography, "Soil Conservation, History, and Environmental Discourse in the Caribbean"; Daniel W. Mosser, associate professor of English, "A Description of the Charles-Moise Briquet Archive in Geneva"; and Katherine Soniat, associate professor of English, "Objective Landscapes: A Collection of Poems."
Two alternates were also named: David Burr, professor of history, and Barbara Reeves, visiting assistant professor of science and technology studies and humanities in CIS.
The proposals of Christman and Barrow were selected as Virginia Tech's nominations for Summer Stipends from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
