Grant-writing program offered
The Office of Program Development of Research and Graduate Studies is sponsoring "Writing Winning Grants" as a part of its effort to enhance the university's sponsored-program activities. This nationally acclaimed program provides intensive exposure to aspects of grantsmanship that represent a competitive edge in the quest for research funding.
"Write Winning Grants" will be presented December 1 and 2 in Owens Banquet Hall. There will be four half-day sessions: Session 1, December 1, 8 a.m.-noon: "General Principles and Fundamentals That Are Applicable to All Grant Application Writers." Session 2, December 1, 1-5 p.m.: "Specific Tips and Strategies Related to Applications in the Biomedical Sciences and Animal Health/disease." Session 3, December 2, 8 a.m.-noon: "Specific Tips and Strategies for Those Planning Multi-investigator, Group-based Applications." Session 4, December 2, 1-5 p.m.: "Interactive Session on Introductory Grant-writing Appropriate for Beginning Grant Writers."
This program is free to the Virginia Tech community. However, space is limited so advanced registration is required. You may register for as many sessions as you wish. Faculty members will have preference in registration, but graduate students and staff members may also attend. Otter Woman to visit Museum of Natural History
The program "Otter Woman-Native American Lifeways" will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 11 a.m.-noon, the Virginia Tech Museum of Natural History. Otter Woman will show how Cherokee people dressed and decorated themselves for different occasions. Participants will make a necklace. For all ages. $4 per person/$3 for members. Poinsettia sale scheduled
The Virginia Tech chapter of Pi Alpha Xi will be holding its Annual Poinsettia Sale on Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 7 a.m. until the plants are sold out. The sale will be held at the university greenhouses on Washington Street.
Poinsettias can be pre-ordered and placed on reserve by contacting Robert McDuffie at 1-7432 or mcduff@vt.edu . These plants must be picked up Monday, Dec. 1 at the greenhouses.
Pi Alpha Xi is the national honor society of students in floriculture and ornamental horticulture. This sale is the only fund-raising event of the year for the local chapter. Funds generated from the sale are used to fund scholarships for undergraduate horticulture students, sponsor speakers from the horticulture trade, and recognize outstanding alumni.
DBHCC hosts gingerbread house demonstration
The Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center will host a gingerbread house demonstration and holiday breakfast buffet on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
Sponsored by the American Culinary Federation and the New River Valley Chefs Association, the event will include demonstrations by James Sexton, executive chef for The Grove and culinary instructor; Gail Perrotta, pastry chef for Donaldson Brown; and Kevin Murphy, general manager and vice president of the Farmhouse Restaurant in Christiansburg.
Gingerbread houses will be raffled off after the demonstration with proceeds benefiting a local charity.
The breakfast buffet will include custom-made omelets and waffles, fresh fruits, pastries, and juices.

Hotel to remain open during holiday
Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center will remain open Thanksgiving Day through the following weekend, a time when the hotel is normally closed. Room rates are $49 for a single and $70 for a one-bedroom suite. This special holiday rate will be honored November 26-30. For reservations, call 1-5156.
Extra copies of alumni magazine available
Departments that would like extra copies of the Fall 1997 Virginia Tech Magazine for recruitment or public relations purposes may order them by calling Linda Gallagher at 1-6867.
CommonHealth offers program on adolescent health
Guest speaker Marty Wunsch will speak on adolescent development and the health issues of this population on Thursday, Dec. 4, from noon to 1 p.m. in conference room G, Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center. To register, call 1-7810.
Bursar's Office to close for holidays
The Bursar's Office will be closed noon, December 24 through January 2 for the holidays. Paychecks only will be distributed for three hours on December 31 from 9 a.m. to noon at window number 7. All other functions of the office will be closed.
To avoid delays in receiving pay during these limited hours, or for those employees who will be out of town for break or the holidays, sign up now for direct deposit. This enables deposit of funds in bank accounts on payday without delay. Return the completed direct-deposit form to the Bursar's Office by December 1.
Some employees eligible for leave sharing
Virginia Tech employees in the following areas have requested leave donations: College of Architecture and Urban Studies, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cooperative Extension Service, Physical Plant, Residential and Dining Programs, University Libraries, Vice President for Information Systems.
These employees are eligible to receive leave through the Leave Sharing Program. Salaried classified or 12-month regular faculty employees may participate by donating annual leave in increments of eight hours.
There is no maximum donation limitation per year, nor is there a minimum balance that must be maintained.
To protect recipients, the names and details of medical conditions will remain confidential. However, leave must be donated to either a specific individual or area.
Donor forms are available from department administrative offices or from the Personnel Services Department at 1-9331. Return the completed form to Ella Mae Vaught, Leave Administrator, Personnel Services, Southgate Center, Blacksburg, Virginia, 24061-0318.
Fund drive seeks food, clothing, and cash
Once again this year classified staff, faculty, and students in the College of Engineering are collecting non-perishable food, new and like-new clothing, and cash donations to support the Montgomery County Christmas Store. Recreational Sports modifies hours for break
During the Thanksgiving break, hours for the Department of Recreational Sports in War Memorial Hall have been modified to the following: Wednesday, Nov. 26 through Friday, Nov. 28--closed; open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29; open 9 a.m.to 11 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 30.
DERC visits Petersburg/Goochland area
The Department of Employee Relations Counselors will meet with interested employees in Petersburg, Richmond and the following counties: Amelia, Chesterfield, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Louisa, Nottoway, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, and Sussex.
The Farmville visit is Thursday, Dec. 4, at the Virginia Employment, 1705 East Third Street. The Petersburg visit is on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Rodof Shalom Public Library, 1865 South Sycamore Street.
The Goochland visit is Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Pamunkey Regional Library, 2931 River Road.
The DERC counseling program provides employees outside the Richmond area with an opportunity to meet individually with a staff counselor and to receive assistance in options for dealing with work-related concerns, discussion of applicable state policies, information on the grievance procedures, referral for further assistance.
